Struggling with (John 20: 21-23)
"Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.
And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained."
After reading John 20 countless times, it wasn't until yesterday that this passage stopped me from reading any further. It was the words remit and retain.
Retain: to continue to hold; to keep in possession; not to lose, or dismiss; to keep in paid, to restrain; to prevent.
Remit: to send back; to surrender; to resign; to restore; to send off or away; to forgive; to pardon; to remove; to loose; to release
Was this a command to the twelve disciples only? The verse seems to be connected to what the Lord told Peter in Matthew 16 "And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
But then there is (Matthew 18: 15-20) that says: "Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican. Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."
