Galatians 5:2, you insist on giving God your pocket change to help pay for it, that might seem like a nice gesture, but it is actually a deep insult. By trying to pay, you are turning a loving gift into a business transaction, you are saying his gift was not sufficient, you are degrading his generosity, that is exactly what you do, when you try to add your own works to Jesus’ sacrifice, you are trying to pay for a house you could never afford with pocket change that is worthless. Hebrews 9:18-28, the blood the High Priest brought into the Holy of Holies was always the blood of an animal, never his own, every one of these limitations points to a system that was never designed to be the final answer.

Hebrews 9:8, the Holy Spirit was showing something through this arrangement to the writer of Hebrews, the Spirit was indicating that as long as this system was standing, the way into God’s presence was not yet fully open. The restricted access was never the final plan, it was pointing forward to something better, that system was real, it was given by God, it accomplished real things, but it had a limitation that no amount of ritual could fix, the blood of animals could clean the outside, but it could never reach the inside.

Hebrews 9:9, conscience is the deepest part of your inner life, it is the place where guilt lives, it is where shame hides, the old sacrificial system could make a person ceremonially clean, Hebrews 9:13, it was real, it worked on the surface. A person could bring their sacrifice, follow the ritual and walk away clean enough to approach the Temple, but the next year, they had to come back and the year after that, because the blood of an animal could touch the skin, but it could never touch the soul. What the old system was doing, it was addressing the exterior, it was managing the symptoms, but the root problem, the stain on the conscience, remained untouched.

Hebrews 9:14, animal blood purified the flesh, Jesus Christ’s blood cleanses the conscience, animal blood addressed behavior, Jesus Christ’s blood addresses the person and the purpose of this cleansing is to serve the living God. The goal is not just to make you feel better, it is to set you free, so that you can actually live for God without the weight of unresolved guilt holding you back. No animal’s blood could reach deep enough, only a perfect, willing human sacrifice could go where the problem actually lived, inside.
