Rethinking Babel

What was the Tower of Babel? Are we, in the day of sky scrapers, to think it literally? Perhaps it not a literal retelling, but, as I suspect, one of many tests throughout the Bible? Test for what? A test of discernment to see whether one can tell the difference. In Genesis it told of how the people of the Earth were of one language* and this is to say that they had achieved an understanding without fundamental division. Was not the tower a metaphor for the city of God their being as one in language would have entailed? Our God of pure love is the foundation stone for such a world, not its detrimenter, a world without division and where all wish to realize godliness for their world, achieve heaven on earth.

*And I am not advocating for the reduction of languages to any single one, but highlighted in the Genesis passage, taken as partial blueprint for a better world, is called for an understanding as to language so that within our multiplicity of languages a one tongue can emerge.
