Peter saying that some of Paul’s writings are hard to understand does not support assigning meanings to Scripture that the text never gives. Peter’s warning was that “they that are unlearned and unstable wrest” those writings “unto their own destruction” (2 Peter 3:16). That is a warning against twisting difficult passages, not permission to discover hidden layers that cannot be demonstrated from Scripture.

I also agree that spiritual discernment is necessary. But spiritual discernment does not replace the written Word as the standard. The Holy Spirit gives us understanding of what He inspired. He does not authorize us to add meanings that cannot be shown from the text.

Parables do not prove Lizbeth’s interpretation either. When Jesus gave parables, the meaning belonged to Him, and He often explained that meaning to His disciples. The listener was not free to assign a spiritual meaning to every person, place, and detail.

You appeal again to early church teaching, spiritually mature people, martyrs, and people who supposedly possessed deeper understanding. None of that answers the question. Martyrdom does not make someone’s interpretation inspired. Holiness does not make someone incapable of error. Agreement among people who consider themselves spiritually mature does not establish biblical truth.

The Bereans tested even the preaching of an apostle by the Scriptures: “They received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (Acts 17:11).

The issue is not whether Scripture has deep meaning. Of course it does. The issue is whether the proposed meaning actually comes from Scripture.

Where does Scripture say the wilderness generation represents the old man, their children represent the new man, Jordan represents a second work of grace, or Canaan represents entire sanctification? Neither difficult passages, spiritual discernment, church teachers, nor martyrs establish those claims.

The interpretation still must be shown from the Word of God.
We need to read and search the scriptures like the Bereans certainly. But understanding them all is a another thing. That goes hand in hand with growth, which happens over time. And there is the aspect that we pay a price for truth and to grow.........like where Jesus spoke about the one building the tower counting the cost to build it and to finish it. The bible says "BUY the truth, but sell it not." (which today's modern merchants of Babylon are not obeying)

I read that as Cornelius was converted. Just because he was a soldier does not mean he wasn't.

I don't understand....."Just because he was a soldier does not mean he wasn't." ... he wasn't what?? Could you please clarify?

It is assumed that Cornelius was not a Christian because he was a soldier but I have read that early believers had an issue with those type for not leaving their non Christian work.

I know we need the illumination of the Holy Spirit to understand Scripture. I have never denied that. But the Holy Spirit opens our understanding to what He has already revealed. He does not add new meanings to the text, change what the text says, or establish doctrines that cannot be shown from Scripture.
Here is an honesty test for you.

How many kinds of people...eternal destinies... do you read here? (and then compare that to someone with grade 1 reading skills, what any unbiased 5 year old would say...as a child would read it))

He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. Rev. 22:11

I realize that the answer is a very high number for any evangelical to count to...

That was true at that time, but what reason do we have to think that the Bible is insufficient by itself now?

Personally I find the Scriptures so specific that all these doctrinal questions are answered in Scripture, with all heresies being identified and refuted.

But one must be willing to take the Scripture for exactly what they say, and not for what they do not say. Spiritual interpretion, in my understanding, means not filtering the Scriptures through flesh, and I believe the Spirit has to train us in that.

A true and spiritual interpretation will only illuminate the actual words used. You'll read a verse a 100 times, and then at reading 101 it suddenly because clear to you, and you understand the words you read, and you'll see how it was there all the time, only, now you see it.

Much love!
I would say the bible is insufficient without the Holy Spirit..........we need oil for our lamps.

That's not in context....that is a novice mistake of thinking one verse cancels all other verses that says something different. You have taken one verse out of context and destroyed righteousness that God accepts. Amazing.

In one fell swoop you undo all teachings of Jesus including the sermon on the mount. And ironically also what every other book of the bible teaches. How religious and silly.

Find a non-vague verse that shows that God no longer accepts the fear of the Lord, humility, meekness and doing righteousness.

Consider that calling all men into repentance into sinless holiness does not negate ANY attribute of righteousness. Paul said that the bible is good for instruction in righteousness. That means that is something WE are to supply.
God's word is likened to the washing of the water of the word........it has power to cleanse us of sins so that we can be righteous through the Holy Spirit, not of ourselves. Old covenant people had to try to rely on their own righteousness because Jesus had not yet died and been resurrected and His Spirit had not yet been given.

Most modern believers will fail every honesty test because the beliefs they hold are arrived at through dishonesty. And even when they SEE that they still cling to their dishonesty like a life raft for the outer man.

Okay, my point was that he was a righteous Gentile that feared God. This got God’s attention and God, not being a respecter of persons, sent Paul to speak to him and his household and the Holy Spirit came down on them.

In context would be Acts 10:

There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,
2A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway.
3He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius.
4¶And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.
5And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter:
6He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do.
7And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually;
8And when he had declared all these things unto them, he sent them to Joppa.
9¶On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:
10And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,
11And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:
12Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.
13And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.
14¶But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.
15¶And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.
16This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven
.
17¶Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made enquiry for Simon's house, and stood before the gate,
18And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there.
19¶While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.
20Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.

21¶Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?
22¶And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.
23Then called he them in, and lodged them. And on the morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied him.

Peter at Caesarea

24¶And the morrow after they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them, and had called together his kinsmen and near friends.
25And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.
26But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.
27And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together.
28And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.
29Therefore came I unto you without gainsaying, as soon as I was sent for: I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me?
30¶And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,
31And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.

32Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee.
33Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.

Gentiles Hear Good News

34¶Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:
35But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

36The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)
37That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;
38How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
39And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:
40Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;
41Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.
42And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.
43To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
44¶While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
45And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

46For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
47Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?
48And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

I posted Acts 10 so people could SEE the context. A righteous man, Cornelius (non-Jew), was recognized by God and called into holiness!!
ie Righteousness gets God's attention!!
THAT IS THE CONTEXT.
I'm not seeing anything there to suggest that Cornelius was made "holy" in the sense you are talking about. He was receiving the gospel and Holy Spirit for the first time.........because he still needed it to be saved. There's no reason to think he wouldn't need to grow and pay the price for holiness like every believer.

The need to make Cornelius out to be instantly "holy" here is only to support where Epi says there are "righteous" who don't need Christ and the gospel to be saved. Thinking that they are saved without knowing Him.

However, since the word says "GREAT grace was upon them all" in the beginning, it may be that the early church started out further ahead in some ways than most of us when we first get saved in our time.....perhaps a more powerful outpouring of the Spirit or a deeper work at the time of illumination. Like a rocket boost to get the church started and before things started to go downhill.

@bdavidc

David, I truly understand where you are coming from, so I will try as much as I can here. I was an earnest Bible thumping evangelical for a long time and I mean 50 odd years and fully accepted the teaching, though I went from a fully fledged Cavinist for some of that time.

I absolutely agree that nothing should be accepted that goes against scripture. But scripture is not a rule book that fell out of heaven with nothing else needed.

Paul is saying that not everything is in scripture. That does not say that anything can contradict the written word though. You are not appreciating how much can fall under that for interpretaion.

Protestantism is hugely infected with scholasticism.

The problem here is a mindset that there is in the west as opposed to the eastern and therefore the early church mindset. I am not taking about those who were condemned of heresy. There were disagreements too. But there was a rule that no-one could theologize unless they had reached the stage they called theosis and were considered doctors of the church. Amongst these, there was remarkable agreement.

Roman Catholicalism drew away from the true church, and then, Protestantism from that and carried with it many of the errors of the RCC. Nowadays, Orthodoxy is as full of errors and leaning back to the RCC and ecumenism.

I am not saying that we have permission to spiritualize everything we want to, but there is so much richness in there that helps us in our quest to develop the mind of Christ and so much testimony from the past that gives us guidance of we want to be all that Christ desires for us, that is to be partakers of the divine nature.

The Bereans tested even the preaching of an apostle by the Scriptures: “They received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (Acts 17:11).

Looking at that text again, I think Paul could be saying that the Bereans checked out to see if what Paul was teaching was written there, not that they understood the spiritual meanings. And that is what we do in our growth in Christ.
and therefore MANY believed . They did indeed search the scrips and thus since the scrips DO agree WITH the Gospel of Christ
amen . And you are correct the RCC is bad news and the protestant realm and all realms
now do that one same work of inclusive ecueincalism and its path to peace . Which i might add
HAS TOTALLY DENIED the TRUE peace plan of GOD . For by FAITH in Christ will one have PEACE with GOD .
ONLY their peace plan LIED b ig time . Someone , and not just someone , but THE ONLY ONE , JESUS THE CHRIST of GOD
and the dire need to BELIEVE ON HIM , WELL IT GOT DENIED by this interreligious dialogue for peace .
Now seeing JESUS said very clearly that HE did not come to bring peace on earth ,
NOR would GOD testify on such world peace THAT DO DENY THE DIRE NEED to BELIEVE on HIS SON .
Who and what do YOU THINK is behind this whole movement .
He who by peace , that was prophesied of old would come and establish a covenant of peace , would destroy many .
OH that be who and what this spirit is of that worketh this one big ol unity , finding common ground
for world peace . ONLY , and i mean ONLY , would an anti christ and many anti christs SOLD US this lie .
And merge they do and merge they will . But not the sheep . JESUS has the sheep .

Reading skills are required when reading the bible. The word "holy" in the term HOLY Spirit is an adjective. Like "red" in a red house is an adjective. Are you following? So then the holy Spirit makes a person holy. Not righteous....but holy. Righteousness is what we DO with that.
........because he still needed it to be saved.

Cornelius was NOT a Protestant.
There's no reason to think he wouldn't need to grow and pay the price for holiness like every believer.

The first time receiving holiness is as a sample of grace. Paying the price for holiness is for any subsequent filling.
The need to make Cornelius out to be instantly "holy" here is only to support where Epi says there are "righteous" who don't need Christ and the gospel to be saved.
Cornelius was made holy for the time he remained in the Spirit. Of course Cornelius was righteous BEFORE being saved into holiness. But now that he was in the higher walk and race...what was that going to do to his attainment of righteousness? Would he get puffed up? Or would he go downward into MORE humility to cover his higher attainment of holiness? We are not told....but that is the race of faith.

Thinking that they are saved without knowing Him.

The righteous don't see themselves as righteous. Only the self-righteous see themselves as righteous. The humble don't see themselves as being humble...just honest. And the courageous don't see themselves as courageous.
However, since the word says "GREAT grace was upon them all" in the beginning, it may be that the early church started out further ahead in some ways than most of us when we first get saved in our time.....perhaps a more powerful outpouring of the Spirit or a deeper work at the time of illumination. Receiving holiness IN righteousness (God gives grace to the humble) takes a person further than receiving holiness in unrighteousness.

What more and more seem to forget is .......
WHO and what did the apostels preach n teach . FAITH IN JESUS THE CHRIST .
As far as the it may be the early church started out further ahead in some ways than most of us ........
TWO things . THE twelve HAD the more sure word of prophecy and thus they also
Would and did instruct the church , WITH UNTAINTED by men doctrines , BY THE GLORIOUS TRUTH .
And now a word .
Long long ago , perhaps over ten years i seen a sister type
something . She said perhaps GOD gave you more grace at my start .
NO sister , HE gave me the same grace he giveth to all . HE put me into ONE BOOK
untainted by men and their doctrines . And in the days following and the nights
By grace I stayed ONLY in that book .
And that is why i often seem DIFFERENT than most . More grave , more direct , More ALWAYS pointing to JESUS
and What he taught and always with a dire sense of urgency exposing quickly all error and all who teach such .
What this people needs is an exodus and an entrodus .
Exodus OUTTTA places and mens doctrines by means of an entrodus INTO THAT BIBLE for themselves .
The call was simple and it is clear . This people perish from lack of knowledge
and have chosen carnal wisdom that feeds eomtional highs and does not expose the darkness they so love
and they so walk in my dear sister . This people NEEDS THE ONE TRUE JESUS CHRIST
and they aint gonna learn HIM in most churches at all . But we sure do have an aresenal of TRUTH
that was left us BY THE TRUE MEN . And oh yeah its in that bible , them letters and etc .
And its time and high time folks return to that my dear sister .

I just read what king horse in cart left you . And believe me when i do say
when he implies reading skills and that we need reading skills , HE is no different
than any other . HE means YA NEED to see and read it LIKE HE DO sister . HE aint fooling me .
If what he calleth reading skills is reading skills , THEN NO THANKS , I SHALL CLING TO the SPIRIT
not to men of HIC . Heeding the SPIRIT and testing all against sound doctrine .
Cause Hic will save none . And Hic honors not the SON . THERE IS NO HONOR given to JESUS THE CHRIST
by any who calls BELEIVING ON HIM lip service and religious dogma .
The gospel . WHY do you think even the gentiles were so HAPPY and wanting to hear it again the following sabbath .
WHY IT WAS GOOD NEWS sister . GOOD NEWS . Salvation , LIFE ETERNAL , The ability to be made and counted RIGHTEOUS
And that by FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST . Hic will save none and this method will never
HONOR the SON and thus in no way do it honor the Father .
Just some friendly advice and reminders for us all dear sister .

Actually the difference between the early church and the modern church is that the church at that time was not yet corrupted by false doctrines and the gospel was still the real gospel. Add to that that the early believers were honest and not dishonest like so many modern believers, and we can see why God was with them more than with us.

The law of entropy flies in the face of the theory of evolution. DNA, even spiritual DNA gets degraded over time. People need to seek God for themselves since people are as blind and deaf as a rock or a random piece of wood and can't be instructed by those who have indeed sought the Lord and been translated to walk with Christ.

It seems like you really can't help yourself, can you. You have to be demeaning to people because apparently you still need to be delivered from the power of sin perhaps?

I don't know about anyone else but I 'm not going to take credit/glory for what righteousness I have. I wonder how many times do you need to read the scripture that says "What do we have that we didn't RECEIVE" ...? That would be someone who is puffed up and proud who would take the glory away from God, like the unbelieving Pharisees who knew not the power of God. When I came to faith some sins dropped off automatically....not my own righteousness. There was another sin that I didn't know was sin, but as soon as I read it in the bible I walked away from it right away, by God's grace, not by my own righteousness, and it was easy. Do you not believe where it says we are HIS workmanship..?

As you know I don't disagree with everything you are saying about holiness, but my goodness, we do need to get the foundational things right, otherwise it's another gospel.

No. The UNBELIEVABLE density of religious people is so exasperating because a very simple term can't be understood even as children could understand it.

After a while that dullness of understanding gets to the point where an adult conversation becomes impossible. And at that point one must try dumbing down a conversation to a point where a point can be understood. BUT, the pride in the dullard gets in the way...and offenses arise. So then the ignorant are left ignorant because of dishonesty and pride. Like trying to teach a spoiled child.
I don't know about anyone else but I 'm not going to take credit/glory for what righteousness I have. You believe another gospel. All you are learning from me is how to better hide your errors. You are trying to use a better terminology to explain what you don't understand....like Trump does in his business dealings. He learns a few slogans and terms...and then tries to pass himself off as someone who knows what he's talking about.

So I don't see you as any closer to the truth than before....just learning more doctrinal intricacies...clever ones at that...but your comprehension level is sub-par to put it mildly.

Amen.

And LOL. All hail King Horse-In-Cart. Need to bring a shovel and a big pail on wheels around here sometimes, ha-ha-ha.

Oh I get it, your sin is our fault for exasperating you. It has been noticeable all along how you always justify yourself instead of being honest and simply (humbly) acknowledging your wrong. That is why you can't and haven't changed in the nearly four years I've been conversing with you. Hope you will ask God if pride is getting in your way, and for His help, Epi. Because you won't be able to walk in the righteousness of humility by yourself......because you have it not of your own. I've seen you try, but it never lasts long.

LOL You underestimate God's intelligence level so that He can only think as far as you do. In your pretend world God just wants lip-service and religious sounding platitudes. And you get a LOT of likes (that's why you are here...seeking approval from people) because most people are no more intelligent and discerning than you are. And brother, that's not a very high standard.

It's a good thing then, that the intelligence of man is not highly valued in the kingdom of God.
