The Rivers of Living Water - Part 1-2 (From Genesis to Revelation)
This morning I was thinking about a family member who was having difficulty hearing from the lord lately. Although he is very much a prophet and moves powerfully in the gifts, he could not sense the Holy Spirit's leading for a number of weeks. Then lord gave me John 7:37-39 relating to his situation, where Jesus spoke about "rivers of living water" flowing out of our hearts. After singing "There's a river of life flowing out from me," I came under a powerful anointing and felt prompted to write a study on The River of Life - Rivers of Living waters1. The River and the Spirit of Creation
Genesis 1:2 (NKJV)“The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”
The Spirit of God moves upon the waters, the first image of divine movement in Scripture. Water and the Spirit are intertwined from the beginning, bringing life, renewal, and creation.
2. The River in Eden: The Flow from God’s Presence
Genesis 2:10-14 (NKJV)“Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four riverheads. The name of the first is Pishon... The name of the second river is Gihon... The name of the third river is Hiddekel; it is the one that goes toward the east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.”
The first river in Scripture begins in Eden, flowing from the dwelling place of God. It nourished the land and symbolized divine life proceeding from God Himself. The pattern is set: life flows from God’s presence, bringing fruitfulness wherever it goes.
When man sinned, he was driven from the garden and thus cut off from the direct flow of God’s life.
From this moment, all of Scripture unfolds God’s plan to restore the river of His presence to humanity.
3. The River in the Wilderness: Water from the Rock
Exodus 17:6 (NKJV)“Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.”
In the wilderness, God again reveals Himself as the source of life. From the rock came water for a thirsty people.
1 Corinthians 10:4 (NKJV)
“And all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.”
This water from the rock prefigured Christ, who would later be struck for the salvation of all. From him flows the living water of the Spirit to all who believe.
4. The River in Psalms: The Presence of God
Psalm 46:4-5 (NKJV)“There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God,
The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High.
God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;
God shall help her, just at the break of dawn.”
Though Jerusalem had no physical river, the psalmist speaks of a spiritual river, God’s presence bringing peace and joy to His people.
This is the same river that will later appear in the prophets and in Revelation. God flowing among His people.
5. The Promise of Outpouring - The Prophets Foretell the River
Isaiah 44:3 (NKJV)“For I will pour water on him who is thirsty,
And floods on the dry ground;
I will pour My Spirit on your descendants,
And My blessing on your offspring.”
Isaiah 12:3 (NKJV)
“Therefore with joy you will draw water
From the wells of salvation.”
Isaiah 55:1 (NKJV)
“Ho! Everyone who thirsts,
Come to the waters;
And you who have no money,
Come, buy and eat.”
These prophecies shift the meaning of water from physical to spiritual. God promises to pour out His Spirit like water on dry and barren hearts.
The “wells of salvation” point toward the coming Messiah, the true source of living water.
The river began in Eden, flowed through the wilderness, and now gathers as a prophetic promise, waiting for the day it will burst forth again through the Messiah.
The River of Living Water - Part 2: The Deepening River & the Feast of Tabernacles
1. Ezekiel’s Vision: The River from the Temple
Ezekiel 47:1, 5, 9 (NKJV)“Then he brought me back to the door of the temple; and there was water, flowing from under the threshold of the temple toward the east... The water was up to the ankles… the knees… the waist… it was a river that could not be crossed.
And it shall be that every living thing that moves, wherever the rivers go, will live.”
Ezekiel sees a progressively deepening river flowing from the temple, life flowing outward from the presence of God. The further it goes, the deeper it becomes.
Wherever the river flows, there is life, healing, and fruitfulness. This symbolizes the ever-increasing work of the Spirit, from a touch to immersion, from refreshing to transformation.
2. Zechariah’s Prophecy: Living Waters and the Coming King
Zechariah 14:8–9, 16 (NKJV)“And in that day it shall be that living waters shall flow from Jerusalem,
Half of them toward the eastern sea and half of them toward the western sea;
In both summer and winter it shall occur.
And the Lord shall be King over all the earth.
And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left of all the nations… shall go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Tabernacles.”
Zechariah connects living waters with the reign of the Messiah and the Feast of Tabernacles, a prophetic picture of divine rule and the outpouring of the Spirit.
