Phillippians 3:8-9,
8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,
9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
You cannot be found in Christ on your own, you don't come to knowledge on your own, it will be the HolySpirit that brings you to that understanding. Chapter three is where you find Paul giving physiological aspects of human life, in other words what makes a human being tick. So you can take Phillippians three very patiently and slowly to get all the physiological aspects of these verses because Paul knew more about the mind and the human being than anybody else in the scriptures at least his writing show that.
Many theologians and scholars have followed Paul through the years for that reason. What is the dung paul is talking about? It was everything that made Paul who he was and now paul considered his past knowledge and everything about him fertilizer for this new knowledge. That makes your past knowledge count for something but it does not count for the new knowledge.
New knowledge is exactly that, it's a new knowledge that never exsisted before with you anyway. So we are talking about a man who suffered the loss of all things, a man who was made up of things he considered dung now for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ. So if you belong to Christianity you must come to this new knowledge.
Christianity in general deals with the correctment of the human being, Paul deals with what the human being has become in Christ. So when Paul use's the word "I" he is speaking about union he has come to, union because he stated in other places that he could do nothing of himself. So it is Paul is the greatest psychologist that ever lived because of his union understanding of Christianity, other writers were great and greatly used of God and wrote through inspiration of God.
They give us understanding into the things of God but they did not give the physiological points Paul did. Paul told us what makes up a human being, that is deep calling to deep! no where else can we get that calling to us as in Phillippians three therefore it can easily be said and quote Paul "follow me as I follow Christ". Paul must be followed in the scriptures to know the plan and purpose of God.
