I have recently been involved in an intense debate about tulip aka known as the five points of Calvin. These five points were a rebuttal of the five points proposed by Jacob Arminius at the council of Dort in 1619. Both sides believed they had teh biblical truth on the five points they offerred.

Before I even knew of Calvin or Arminius I was a five pointer without even knowing it. My first year as a believer I spent all my time in reading nothing but the Scriptures.

But there is a lot of misinformation about what the five points of Calvin are, so I will briefly explain them here. Let us remember that TULIP is merely an acronym and not the definition. with that in mind let me give a brief summary.

T= total depravity. This does not mean that mankind is as evil as they can be, but all are as lost as they can be. No one is partially saved.
John 3:3, Roman 3:10, Rom. 3:23

U= unconditional election. this simply means that a person does not have to "clean up their act", say X amount of prayers or do X amount of good deeds before they can come to saving faith in Jesus. All that is required is faith in christ. Eph 2:8, Rom.10:9

L= limited atonement. this is a hotly contested item. These simply means that only the elect receive the atonement. The biggest reason for the disagreement I have found is that people confuse the meaning of atonement with propitiation. Jesus is the propitiation for all of mankind. That means He is the acceptable sacrifice for all of mankind, thus making all men savable. However, in the NT , atonement means an erasing of sin, and only the elect have their sins erased.

I = Irresistible grace. This is another hotly debated one. This is the argument between predestination and free will. This does not mean that God makes believers do everything they do every day. This has to do with the Elect being predestined to be saved before God created the world and they will be drawn to jesus.

First th enegative. The unsaved man cannot do anything that pleases God.

Isaiah 64:6
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
Romans 8:8
So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
1 Corinthians 1:18
For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
1 Corinthians 2:14
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
Romans 8:7
Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

Now the positive! The elect will be drawn to God!

Psalm 139:13
For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.
Galatians 1:15
But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace,
Ephesians 1:4
According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
Ephesians 1:5
Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
Ephesians 1:11
In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
John 6:44
No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 6:37
All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
John 6:39
And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
John 15:16
Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

P= perseverance of the saints or eternal security! or also known as once saved always saved.

See verses for I above and then also:

John 10:28
And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

Hope this helps your understanding.

Curious what your take is on Original Sin. Calvin's TULIP relies on that theory being accurate or else the entire doctrine falls apart.

Acts 17:24-28 KJV
24) God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
25) Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
26) And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;
27) That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:
28) For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

God has chosen when and where each of us would live, in order that we would seek the Lord, to grope for Him, and find Him. This is God's clear intent for us, that we would seek Him, and find Him. And He's given us the best spot from which to look.

Much love!

Calvin did not come up with Tulip.
The acronym "TULIP" is associated with the five points of Calvinism, which summarize key doctrinal positions within Reformed theology. While the theological concepts represented by TULIP have roots in the writings of various theologians within the Reformed tradition, the specific formulation of TULIP as an acronym is attributed to later proponents and defenders of Calvinism, particularly during the Synod of Dort (Dordrecht) in the early 17th century.

The Synod of Dort convened in 1618-1619 in response to theological controversies within the Dutch Reformed Church, particularly regarding the teachings of Jacobus Arminius and his followers, known as Arminians. The Synod affirmed the Reformed position on various theological issues and produced the Canons of Dort, a doctrinal statement that articulated the Reformed understanding of key doctrines, including those represented by TULIP.

The Canons of Dort affirmed the five points of Calvinism in response to the teachings of the Remonstrants, who were followers of Arminius. While the specific acronym "TULIP" may not have been used during the Synod itself, the theological concepts represented by each letter were affirmed and articulated in the Canons of Dort.

Over time, the acronym "TULIP" became a convenient way to remember and summarize the five points of Calvinism:

T: Total Depravity
U: Unconditional Election
L: Limited Atonement
I: Irresistible Grace
P: Perseverance of the Saints
The term "TULIP" gained prominence in the 20th century, particularly in the context of debates surrounding Calvinism and Arminianism within Protestant theology. While the specific originator of the acronym "TULIP" is not known, it has become a widely recognized shorthand for summarizing key Calvinistic doctrines.

What does this mean that the elect receive the atonement?

What do others receive then?

None of this has been brought to my understanding by the Spirit...maybe he will explain it to me through you?

I certainly know 100% that I am Born Again...

Does this mean that only a certain amount of people will be Born Again?

I certainly understand the erasing of sins..mine were erased the night I became Born Again.....

Or maybe @Rockerduck can explain it to me?

Definitely, a Born Again can only persevere because we have been Born Of The Spirit, no way could I persevere with out being Born Of The Spirit

We can never lose our salvation as our spirit is in Christ’s...

Short commentary
What is meant by perseverance of the saints?
Definition. The doctrine of Perseverance of the Saints asserts that the elect will persevere in faith until the end of their lives and ultimately achieve salvation. Those who are truly born again are the elect who will persevere to the end.

1 Peter 1
King James BiblePar ▾
Greetings from Peter
(2 Peter 1:1-2)

1Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
A Living Hope
3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 5Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: 7That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: 8Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: 9Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
10Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: 11Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. 12Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
A Call to Be Holy
(Hebrews 12:14-17)

13Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: 15But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
17And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: 18Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, 21Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.
The Word of the Lord Stands Forever
(Isaiah 40:6-8)
22Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: 23Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
24For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
25But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

The term atonement refers to the belief that Jesus dying on the cross resolved the problems between humans and God. These problems began with Adam and Eve, who went against God's wishes by eating the fruit from the tree in the Garden of Eden.

Jesus had to die on the cross so that we can be Born Of The Spirit...so both are needed, to be reconciled/ right before God..

We need the death and resurrection of Jesus, we also need to know God in our spirit , when he makes our spirit Born Again...of course there is much more to it than that, drawing us to Jesus, God bringing us to repentance/ Godly sorrow etc...of course our sins must be forgiven/ erased before we become Born Of The Spirit.

A Born Again has Gods Living Witness indwelling their heart/ spirit...only he can bring us to understanding Gods written word in the Spirit.

We know nothing without Him and we are nothing without Him....The Holy Spirit is vital for us to understand God’s written word...he testifies/ witnesses Gods truth to our spirit.

Mind blowing!

BY T. O. BANSO

“The proud have hidden a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set traps for me” (Psalm 140:5 New King James Version).

Proverbs 1:17
says surely, in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird. In other words, when a bird sees a trap being set, it stays away. A bird will not see a trap being set and fall into it. Traps or snares are not set in the presence of the animals people wish to catch. The animals are caught in traps they’re not aware of. The same applies to traps or snares set for human beings.

The enemies set traps to catch others and, usually, they use bait to attract their targets. Unaware of the trap, they get caught or ensnared as soon as they make contact with the bait. “Does a bird ever get caught in a trap that has no bait?” (Amos 3:5a New Living Translation). Once someone gets caught in the enemies’ traps, one is at the mercy of the enemies. You will not fall into your enemies’ traps in Jesus’ name.

Because of a lack of spiritual insensitivity or discernment, many people have been caught in the traps of their enemies. The enemies use different types of traps. In the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ, the enemies at different times tried to use the words of His mouth to trap Him. But Jesus always knew their motive. Therefore, He was not caught in their traps.

Matthew 19:3 says some Pharisees came and tried to trap or test him with this question: Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason? Mark 10:2 also records the same question. They couldn’t trap Jesus with the answer He gave them

The P in T.U.L.I.P states the Elect are eternally irrevocably saved the moment they enter into faith.

This might help.

P= perseverance of the saints or eternal security! or also known as once saved always saved.

See verses for I above and then also:

John 10:28
And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

Hope this helps your understanding.
Perseverance of the saints or once saved always saved (OSAS) basically comes down to that it is someone is saved until if they lose faith. Then the reason for their apostasy isn't that they lost faith, but rather never had true saving faith in the first place; they weren't of the elect. It's a different theology to explain the same phenomenon non-Reformed people call apostasy while in Reformed theology there can't logically be apostasy.

There is a disadvantage of P in compared to non-Reformed theology. Under the perseverance of the saints theory, it's impossible to know who is actually saved and who isn't. How does one know they are elected if there are no shortage of examples of people who seemed to have sincere faith, lost it, and how do you know you aren't going to be one of them? At least to the non-Reformed, the line between saved and not saved is clear while in Reformed theology it seems like who is saved is anyone's guess.

Amen!!!

One knows 100% when they have been Born Again by Gods Living Witness His Holy Spirit....it’s “ mind blowing “...it’s our spirit that has been Born Again.

The Holy Spirit, then, testifies by our spirit when we cry out, “Father!”(8:15) and He also testifies to our spirit that we are children of God (v. 16). The Spirit assures us by our own spirits as well assuring our spirits by His own testimony

Heirs with Christ
…15For you did not receive a spirit of slavery that returns you to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16The Spirit Himself testifies withour spirit that we are God’s children. 17And if we are children, then we are heirs: heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ—if indeed we suffer with Him, so that we may also be glorified with Him

Words could never be enough to thank God for making my spirit come Alive In Christ...it’s the biggest Honour and Privilege one can receive in their lifetime.

We are children of the most HIGH......Praise His Holy Name!

What does those who believe in freewill mean?

Not causing waves, just trying to understand what freewill means?

I know I was chosen and predestined to become Born Again....we know 100% in our spirit that we are Born Again, why do some believe they can lose their salvation?

The security that we have in our spirit is phenomenal....there is our witness the Living Holy Spirit....never ever to leave our spirit, we are in Christ and He in us...

Spirit gives birth to spirit!

1. There is no freewill. Those who believe this, believe that a human element exists for their salvation. Another words, they can, by their "free will", (when they want to), come to God for salvation. However, Its God who chooses those for salvation and God has Sovereign control of all aspects of our salvation. Its a gift and you cannot lose it.

2. Amen. Those who are chosen, understand more of a spiritual depth of God's word and the Word, Jesus.

This only works on the level of holiness. No one is partially holy. Either one is holy or not. We are all lost sheep until we are walking in an intimate relationship with God...in His power and in His location. In Christ we don't sin....we walk in the same life and power that He did. So then from THAT perspective, we are totally incapable of achieving that level of walk without abiding in Christ. It's like we are totally unable to fly UNLESS we abide in an aircraft designed to make humans fly. As we abide in the aircraft we defeat gravity..since the law of flight is stronger than the law of gravity. Likewise the law of life IN Christ is stronger than the law of sin and death.
U= unconditional election. this simply means that a person does not have to "clean up their act", say X amount of prayers or do X amount of good deeds before they can come to saving faith in Jesus. All that is required is faith in christ. Eph 2:8, Rom.10:9
We need to remain faithful till the end to be saved. There are NO conditions to an INITIAL election. But after that we need to be faithful. Those who remain with the Lord in eternity are called chosen AND faithful.

These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful. Rev. 17:14

Jesus died for the sins of the whole world. But He was only raised for the justification of those who follow Him into life.

Atonement means to be purified, cleaned, sanctified. Although the atonement was for all flesh only a very few will be sanctified.
I = Irresistible grace. This is another hotly debated one. This is the argument between predestination and free will. This does not mean that God makes believers do everything they do every day. This has to do with the Elect being predestined to be saved before God created the world and they will be drawn to jesus.

Again the INITIAL grace is irresistible. God knows how to get our attention. However, after that, we are judged by our obedience. We can fall away...we can draw back, we can be diverted from further growth through being deviated into carnal means.

You left out the P in TULIP.....the perseverance of the saints

It's easy to say that the saints are those who remain in the grace of God. Not all who are called to be saints achieve that. Many are called, few are chosen...and fewer still are faithful.

First th enegative. The unsaved man cannot do anything that pleases God.

But the "unsaved" can still be acceptable to God. The bible attests to this. God justifies the ungodly. In fact, we can be likewise justified by accepting that God accepts people who are NOT believers or Godly.

Now the positive! The elect will be drawn to God!
That's true. We have been given an inner witness through regeneration. However, that witness is very gentle and can be overcome by an unruly, loud, and puffed up religious outer man. It is "Be still and know that I am God..."

Imo this is true Epi, the witness who I believe is Gods Living Holy Spirit, can be quenched, by being loud mouthed puffed up with pride and have such an inflated ego that it pops!

Of course I don’t believe this is done will fully it’s done out of our own ignorance, ..speaking from experience,imo.

Whose making us into Jesus image, ourselves or the Spirit within our spirit?

If it’s Gods will that we become humble..who can stop it ,we can hinder his will, it can never be thwarted.

I just learned I am a zero point calvinist.

Total depravity. - I have a different interpretation of total depravity

10 As it is written:

“There is none righteous, no, not one;
11 There is none who understands;
There is none who seeks after God.
12 They have all turned aside;
They have together become unprofitable;
There is none who does good, no, not one.”
13 “Their throat is an open tomb;
With their tongues they have practiced deceit”;
“The poison of asps is under their lips”;
14 “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”
15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16 Destruction and misery are in their ways;
17 And the way of peace they have not known.”
18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

Unconditional election.

It says nothing is required. then it contradicts itself by sayign this "All that is required is faith in christ. Eph 2:8, Rom.10:9 in which I agree. there is a condition. Jesus gave it in John 3. Whoever believes will nto perish.. Whoever does not believe is condemned already

Limited atonement
I do not buy the argument. Christ died for the world. He offered atonement for the world. But only those who reprieve his payment will receive the atonement sacrifice on his account (Abraham believed and it was accounted to him as righteousness)

Irresistible grace - Grace is resistible. everyone who will die in unbelief has resisted Gods grace.

Perseverance of the saints. - No saint perseveres to keep her or himself saved. They are kept By God.
