Man-made sins are hurting church attendance.
A family has a barbecue out at their pool with friends and they smoke and drink beer and mom wears a bikini.
When they go to church with their children and the pastor gets up on the podium and says that it is a sin to drink and smoke and wearing bikinis constitutes sexual misconduct….whoredom.

So not wanting their children to hear this non-sense about their parents they stop going to church. The preacher essentially calling their mother a whore.

With there being so many man-made sins it gives people in congregations ammo to condemn one anothers. Another reason that people stop going to church.

Real biblical sins are named specifically in the scriptures. Specifically not like when the Roman soldiers cast lots for Christ’s clothes, that means gambling is a sin.

Since the scriptures do not require a wedding ceremony to be married it is improper to say couples living together are living in sin. And their children are not bastards because technically the union consummates the marriage.
Unwedded couples should be welcomed in church. The more they associate with the church the more likely they will eventually have a wedding.

Churches should be full of worship, love, and fellowship not condemnation and gossiping.

Is there sin or is all sin "man made"? Should churches not tell their members to avoid sin?

Of course we should avoid sin, and real biblical sins are named specifically in the scriptures.

What do you think about this ^ AI?

"This is what happens when you create 40,000 denominations.
Everyone fights. No one agrees on anything. Each one invents its own ‘sins’ to police. And what’s the result? A mockery of God before the world. It makes it look like the Word can’t unite, when in reality it’s the denominations that divide.

Christ gave one covenant, one body, one Spirit (Eph. 4:4). Man gave 40,000 tribes with 40,000 rulebooks. No wonder people walk away — they see contradiction instead of Christ.”

Ok. Where ?

So a church should tell people to avoid sin. Can you give an example of a "man made" sin?

These are man-made sins but they do not apply to all denominations and it is not a conclusive list.

Sex….False beliefs regarding sex tops the list….I could write a book about this from several angles and levels….physical, physiological, and spiritual….Christianity is full of these and most do not have any idea of the horrors, suffering, miseries, atrocities, and lost souls that they have caused
List of Man-made sins….
Sexual desire
Attraction to the opposite sex
Having sex for other reasons other than procreation
Enjoying sex
Having sex in any other position other than the missionary position and orifices
Kissing in public
Only have sex at night
Thinking about sex
Attraction to the opposite sex is defined as lust
Sex probation on certain days
Couples living together without a wedding ceremony
Contraceptives
Masturbation
Nudity
Going to bed naked
Bathing naked
Breast feeding
Wet dreams
Divorce
Tobacco use
Drinking alcoholic beverages
Drinking in a bar
Drinking coffee…caffeine
Not tithing
Various types of music
Dancing
Music in church
Singing in church
Speaking in tongues in church
Eating pork or reptiles
Gambling
Cards and dice and board games
Women wearing pants
Women wearing shorts
Women wearing make-up
Women wearing dresses above the knees
Women wearing stockings
Women wearing high heels
Women shaving their legs
Women working outside the home
Men with long hair
Women with short hair
Having a profitable career or being rich
Tattoos
Body modifications such as nose jobs, lips, breast augmentation, repairing varicose veins and liposuction
Going to the swimming pool…swimming with mixed sexes…bikinis
Physical sports such as boxing and football
Carnivals
Military service
Service in Law enforcement
Self-defense or the defense of others
They use of any other bible other than the King James Version
The use of any other bible other than the Catholic Bible
Researching Christianity rather than believing what you have been told to believe
Not belonging to a prescribed denomination
Visiting or associating with other denominational churches
The belief you have to have a wedding ceremony to be married
Attending weddings of another denomination
Marrying someone from another denomination
Inter-racial marriages
Watching television
The use of vehicles
The use of technology in general
Blood transfusions
Receiving medical help
The Catholic set of man-made laws could add several dozen to this list of which most are a matter of physical control and belief control.
I am sure there are more….and some of these items if done in excess can be harmful or a sin, but that is pretty much true of anything. It is always more accurate and wiser to stick to the sins listed in the New Testament. Anything that is applicable from the Old Testament is listed in the New Testament. Christians are of the New Covenant.

For a lot of people these Man-made sins are the most important part of Christianity. Which is a red flag. Actual Christian sins are not that hard to know. But still the focus should be on applying Christianity to our lives and doing what Christ said to do….love one another. Fellowship and compassion for one another…..And for God’s sake go to church and get involved with a church. Back in the day people risked their lives to gather and fellowship and worship the Lord together….And they did not have Bibles, they knew a lot less than what we do….But did they practice Christianity more correctly?

Because now a days you almost have to beat people with a stick to get them to go to church.

What a nonsensical list in content and length. Few if any of those things by themselves is a sin. Do you know what conditions are necessary for sin?

AI is batting 10,000 right now

The "problem" is already exploding in this very thread with argument between denominations.. it's hilarious and as predictable as the sun rising.

it breaks it down great..

Church lady logic goes like this:

*‘Well if Lulu Mae had a one-piece on instead of that string bikini, she’d still be the town whore. Our congregation only allows wine — because that’s what Jesus drank — and she’s over there holding a vodka tonic. That’s a whore drink in our eyes.

So even though she finally covered up with a one-piece, which is acceptable, she’s still a whore. And I saw her talking to that newly widowed, handsome veterinarian down at the Food Lion — so now I know she’s a whore. A flirting, vodka-drinking, veterinarian-sleeping whore! Amen.’*

And everyone in the pews nods along like this is holy revelation. That’s what happens when gossip gets canonized — when petty rules matter more than the Gospel.

That’s the toxic spiral of man-made “church rules”:

  • It stops being about Christ, or even about actual sin,
  • and it degenerates into Church Lady Theater — where gossip, suspicion, and nitpicky judgment become the sport of the congregation.
Instead of “love one another, as I have loved you” (John 13:34), it turns into:

  • “Vodka tonic = whoredom.”
  • “Wrong bathing suit = whoredom.”
  • “Talking to a man in public = whoredom.”
It’s basically Pharisee culture rebooted in 2025. A self-appointed morality police force where the real “sin” isn’t adultery, theft, or idolatry — it’s breaking their club’s unwritten dress code.

And you’re right: that nonsense drives people away faster than atheism ever could. Because outsiders look in and think, “If that’s Christianity, it’s just petty gossip wrapped in Bible verses.”

You did not read the post. I said real sins have to be in the scriptures.

Since the scriptures do not require a wedding ceremony to be married it is improper to say couples living together are living in sin. And their children are not bastards because technically the union consummates the marriage.
Unwedded couples should be welcomed in church. The more they associate with the church the more likely they will eventually have a wedding.
In that Jesus told the woman from Sychar that she'd had 5 husbands, and the man she was currently with was not her husband, well, they had definitions for what was wedded and what was not, and Jesus recognized and affirmed this. Elsewhere in the Bible it's just the same, marriage is defined by the cultural norm of being wed, and God recognizes that.

So when our culture has an exchange of vows followed by physical union as our wedding, and someone chooses to not avail themselves of that, say, because they don't want the commitment, they are not married.

Sexual union outside of marriage is sin. Yes, it may make your church more acceptible to those who choose to live in sin, is that a good thing? A church that won't teach on sin and repentance, instead, just make people feel OK in their sin? I don't think so myself.

Much love!

If that's what your church is like you may need a new church.

Our church is busting at the seams, and our pastors do not go soft on sin.

Much love!

Are you asking where sins are listed in the Bible?
Pay attention to my words not the noises in your head,

You said "Real" sins have to be in the Bible. I want you to show me where the "real" sins are located. I will not assume to know what you know. Do you understand?
