Hi there,
So I guess I am just putting this out there, because I have spent a lot of time meditating but never really had control of my brain. The point is simple: the brain is more willing to obey under certain conditions, than others. The condition the brain specifically responds to, is that you not subject it to micro-aggression. Micro-aggression, is where you have a specific expectation in mind, but you are never happy with it - you are always trying to change it, because you refuse to be happy about it (to the point that you get a little angry - "micro-aggression"). God can't use a person, whose brain is afraid to do the right thing!
Now, you may not notice this effect, in the brain, because you have to spend a lot of time being still, to even realise that you are ruling your brain (and subsequently your mind) too aggressively. Standard meditation practice will tell you to "not be attached" to your thoughts, which is great. There is however, a different standard, one that is more grounded in the state of being that the brain exists in. If you can convince the brain to relax, you have tonnes more self-control and will find being still gets easier and easier. That is sort of the point to God saying "Be still and know that I am God" - in other words, don't concern yourself with what you "know" when you are still, but trust God. Don't just get angry at yourself!
Now, the power of this, is something you will have to build up over time. You need the right setting (Jesus commanded a "deserted place" - gospels), the right nutrition, hydration, length of time, time of day, mood (which is less important), connection with the power of God and possibly more. Micro-aggressions start when you are unhappy with what you are experiencing, specifically - concerning the mind - when you are unhappy with what the brain is thinking. This unhappiness is sin, but it takes a while to realise that you are injuring yourself, with over-correction. Just trusting God, is the key to bringing micro-aggression down, bit by bit.
What I am saying is "be patient", but I am also saying "be happy with being patient!". If you get this self-control, true sanity will emerge. There is power in this. You can thank God for this. It is a practice, like prayer, that can deepen your bond with God, as you walk together with Him throughout life.
I hope this has been of some encouragement.
God bless.
