[Deuteronomy 4:13 KJV] "And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, [even] ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone."i explained in my last post, the 1O commandments stands! some of the rest of the laws of Moses might as well but not some parts of it, I suggest you to through them yourself and identify the ones we gentiles can keep, you will soon see many we cannot keep. I have not compiled a list but this i will do eventually but i can give you a summary I made for this study.
Here is a clear and simple way to understand it. Not everything in the Law of Moses was meant to be practiced by Gentiles, but some parts clearly still apply, because Jesus Himself taught and confirmed them.
Here are some categories with only partial examples this is NOT a complete list
1. The ten commandments, also called the Moral law(these apply to everyone)
These laws show right and wrong. Jesus taught these directly and often made them deeper by speaking about the heart.
Examples:
Jesus repeats and strengthens these:
- Do not murder
- Do not commit adultery
- Do not steal
- Do not lie
- Do not covet
- Honor father and mother
- Love God
- Love your neighbor
These come mainly from the Ten Commandments and are clearly for all people, Jew and Gentile.
- “Thou shalt not kill… thou shalt not commit adultery” (Matthew 5, ASV)
- “All things therefore whatsoever ye would that men should do unto you, even so do ye also unto them” (Matthew 7:12, ASV)
2. Laws about love, mercy, and justice (these apply to everyone)
These laws explain how love looks in daily life.
Examples:
Jesus taught this constantly:
- Care for the poor and weak
- Be fair and honest
- Do not oppress others
- Show mercy
- Help your neighbor
These laws show God’s character, not Israel’s nationality.
- “Blessed are the merciful” (Matthew 5:7, ASV)
- “Go ye and learn what this meaneth, I desire mercy, and not sacrifice” (Matthew 9:13, ASV)
3. Laws that define sin (these still matter)
Many laws exist to identify sin, even if the punishment system is no longer applied the same way.
Examples:
Jesus confirms these:
- Sexual immorality
- Idolatry
- Violence
- Dishonesty
- Injustice
If something is still called sin by Jesus, it still matters!!
- “Out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness” (Matthew 15:19, ASV)
4. Civil and national laws of Israel (not required for Gentiles)
These laws governed Israel as a nation, with judges, land, and penalties.
Examples:
Gentiles were never part of Israel’s government, so these do not apply today.
- How courts should sentence criminals
- Land inheritance rules
- Penalties like stoning
- Laws tied to Israel’s kings and borders
5. Temple, sacrifice, and priesthood laws (not practiced today)
These laws were tied to:
Examples:
- The temple
- Animal sacrifices
- Levitical priests
Jesus fulfilled these by His life and sacrifice, and the temple no longer stands. Even Jews cannot practice these today.
- Burnt offerings
- Sin offerings
- Temple rituals
- Priest-only duties
6. Food, clothing, and ritual identity laws (not required for Gentiles)
These laws marked Israel as a separate nation.
Examples:
Jesus makes clear these do not define righteousness:
- Circumcision
- Clean and unclean foods
- Mixed fabrics
- Ritual washings
- “Not that which entereth into the mouth defileth the man” (Matthew 15:11, ASV)
Simple summary
A Gentile today can and should keep:
A Gentile is not required to keep:
- Moral laws
- Love and mercy laws
- Laws that define sin
- Everything Jesus taught and confirmed
In simple words:
- Israel’s national laws
- Temple and sacrifice laws
- Ritual identity laws
Gentiles are not called to become Israelites.
They are called to become obedient followers of Jesus.
And Jesus never taught a faith that ignores obedience.
This verse is saying the ten commandments are the covenant God made with Israel. Gentiles are strangers from the covenants they arent for us.....................[Ephesians 2:12 KJV] "That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:".................the covenants and ten commandments are for Israel.................[Romans 9:4 KJV] "Who are Israelites; to whom [pertaineth] the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service [of God], and the promises;"................If you think you have to obey the ten commandments for righteousness you are making yourself Israel
