My Japanese colleagues were quick to explain that Japanese rice clumps together. You normally don't have to pick up individual grains with chop sticks.

During my recent trip to Beijing, my Chinese colleagues watched me embarrass myself trying to eat with chop sticks and immediately brought me a fork and a spoon.
