"White"--why white?
And why even question, why think there is something more to the idea that the harvest is simply "ready?" What "cardinal rule", what "exegesis" is violated in considering the detail of words actually written? Heaven forbid we look fully in the face of God and ask! Heaven forbid we fully understand!
But I digress--stop listening to those who pooh pooh (love that choice of words--so appropriate--so apropos) the greater spiritual things of God!
The answer is--because that is the "chaff" showing--because it is beginning to die and is pale with death! Just type the word "chaff" in a biblical concordance--here is what comes up--just read down the list: CHAFF.
That is the part of the wheat that gets separated from the harvest and throne in the fire. And how does that work? The wheat grows up among the tares (harmful weeds), then is ready when the chaff that holds the harvest is showing signs of dying, it is then harvested and brought to God's threshing floor where the wheat is separated from the chaff...and the chaff is thrown into the fire while the wheat is kept.
So what--what should we observe from that parable of the harvest describing our own experience which we otherwise only see from within it, instead of the overview that the parable offers? Well--look around--what do you see?
But first, when did Jesus say that the harvest was already ready? Well...2,000 years ago, right? Yes, but He had come for the House of Israel and that is who He was speaking to at the time. So then, looking back, what would someone have seen then? To summarize, let's just say: Israel was under government rule, within their community they had and kept their practices, and their leaders were educated and confident. Does that sound about right?
Does it sound familiar? Does it make your ears perk up, are the wheels turning? Or--"p", "fiddlesticks!?"
What parallels do you see between now and back then--what do you think it means?
"Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!" John 4:35
