The interaction between God and Gideon is interesting, English Standard Version, Judges 6:

12 And the angel of the LORD appeared to him and said to him, “The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valor.”
At first, there was an external theophany. Later, God got closer:

34 But the Spirit of the LORD clothed [H3847] Gideon, and he sounded the trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called out to follow him.
There were others, 1 Chronicles 12:

18 Then the Spirit clothed Amasai, chief of the thirty, and he said, “We are yours, O David, and with you, O son of Jesse! Peace, peace to you, and peace to your helpers! For your God helps you.” Then David received them and made them officers of his troops.
2 Chronicles 24:

20 Then the Spirit of God clothed Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, and he stood above the people, and said to them, “Thus says God, ‘Why do you break the commandments of the LORD, so that you cannot prosper? Because you have forsaken the LORD, he has forsaken you.’”
The Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, yet he performed human sacrifice. The Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon, yet he set up an illegal worship. The Spirit of the Lord came upon Saul (1 Samuel 19:23), yet he disobeyed the Lord. The Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward on which Samuel anointed him (1 Samuel 16:13), yet he committed adultery and murder. The phrase was intended for only a short-term and a particular goal.

That's certainly food for thought. Thank you! I would say that it's an example of God's grace except that it appears to endorse ungodliness. So it may be an anointing for a particular task? Or it may be that God embraces people to encourage them in a particular task whether they later fail or not? Good question!
