(Personal actions of the Holy Spirit,) the Spirit can speak and faithful people still listen together, test what they have heard and act humbly, but speech opens another question. If the Spirit speaks, what does he say? Does the Spirit become a second source of teaching beside Jesus? Does the Spirit told me, allow a believer to move beyond what Christ has already made known? That question takes you to a room where the disciples are beginning to realize that Jesus is leaving, they have walked with him, eaten with him, heard his teaching and watched the crowds change. Now Jesus speaks of departure, hatred, sorrow and things they are not yet ready to bear, the promise of the Holy Spirit arrives inside that fear.
John 14:26, another personal action is teaching and reminding, but the setting is what gives the action its force, Jesus is preparing people who are about to lose the comfort of his visible presence. Fear could distort what they remember, pressure could make Jesus’ words harder hold, yet Jesus tells them that the Father will send the Counselor in his name, the Spirit will teach them, the Spirit will remind them. The disciples will soon be asked to speak about events that have overturned their lives, they will face questions, opposition and their own imperfect memories. The promise is not that the disciples will become naturally brilliant, it is that they will not be left to carry Jesus’ teaching by human strength alone, this gives the Spirit’s teaching a deeply relational shape.
A teacher does not simple transfer information, a teacher knows what the learner has heard, where confusion remains and what must be brought back to mind. Jesus promises more than a surviving set of ideas, he promises the active help of the Counselor and he will do it in relation to what Jesus has said, the Spirit’s teaching is not a rival message, it is Christ-centered. That gives comfort, but it also draws a boundary, Christians rightly depend on the Spirit to illuminate scripture and help them understand truth.
But John chapter 14 was spoken directly to the disciples who heard Jesus’ earthly teaching, it has a special connection to the apostolic witness they would carry into the world, it does not mean that every interpretation offered by a sincere believer is automatically correct, it does not make careful reading unnecessary, it does not turn an impression into scripture. The Spirit teaches, but he is not the patron of careless certainty, he brings the words of Jesus into focus. Now imagine those same words moving out from that room and into the world, the disciples know what they have been told,
