Matthew 5

And having seen the multitudes, he went up to the mount, and he having sat down, his disciples came to him,

2 and having opened his mouth, he was teaching them, saying:
After having made it on top of the mountain for the moment it seems that Jesus was alone with his disciples, which he began teaching them. (until the crowds started to show up afterwards)
3 `Happy the poor in spirit -- because theirs is the reign of the heavens.
Blessed are those who are poor in Spirit - the first step of the spiritual ladder. Being poor in spiritual means a person who devout however, they are spiritually poor, they have the right to know that - the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs because they continue to go to the Father in heaven despite the issues and struggles they tend to have even in opposition.
4 `Happy the mourning -- because they shall be comforted.
Blessed are those who mourn, those who feel guilt when they done wrong, they will be comforted - be it by another person whom is Christian who will encourage to go to the Father, and to pray and to understand that you are loved and are cared for. They will also perhaps mourn with the other, but encourage that God is a God of comfort and full of mercy. Turning to the source of life is always the best option. This is the second step from becoming poor in spirit, into having a realization for guilt of what one may have done towards oneself or another depending on the context of ones own life.
5 `Happy the meek -- because they shall inherit the land.
This is the third step on the spirit ladder, while many people believe that this deals with "actual land", I tend to take it as, happy are those who are humble, and gentle, by the spirit they in turn (in their flesh) will become more meek rather than by the (flesh which can be mean and condescending and try to manipulate or fall into violence). And those who allow the Spirit to change the heart, though they struggle still with things that come up, and could fall back into being poor in spirit, should continue to go the source of life. (could be wrong but you have to decide for yourself)
6 `Happy those hungering and thirsting for righteousness -- because they shall be filled.
The fourth step in the spiritual ladder (as it is easier to put into a visual aspect) is those who are blessed, hungering, and thirsting for righteousness because they shall be filled. Those who are hungry are earnestly desiring, they desire justification (reminds me of being grounded in the Lord Jesus Christ who makes us right with God (Romans 5:1-6), and they by their heart desire to do good, fair, and right towards others by the Spirit of Christ within them. There are those also who may have court cases in which they desire for truth to win out and when it does they rejoice in it, and thus they will be filled. (Continue to be grounded in the source of life, deeply rooted in the Lord)
7 `Happy the kind -- because they shall find kindness.
Blessed are those who are merciful, and compassionate by the spirit, for they also in return shall find those who will show mercy and compassion. The fifth step in the spiritual ladder of the Lord Yeshua, the son of man/son of God.
8 `Happy the clean in heart -- because they shall see God.
Going on to the six step (noticed everyone starts off being poor and grow over time), are those who are clean in heart and blessed because they shall see God. Those who continue to stick to the source of life, Yeshua, and allow the Father (Yahava) to work on their heart and mind, and become clean in their heart (not that they do not have sin with-in the flesh) by their thoughts and feelings to have clean intentions per say - they will be able to see God in all things in a spiritual sense (that is what I take it as).
9 `Happy the peacemakers -- because they shall be called Sons of God.
Happy are the peacemakers, (they enjoy to have peace; be pacific), because they shall be called the Sons (or Daughters) of God. Being in step by the spirit, and those who are lead by the spirit are known as Sons or Daughters of God.
10 `Happy those persecuted for righteousness' sake -- because theirs is the reign of the heavens.
Going on to the eighth step in the Spiritual Ladder of a Born Again Christ are those who are happy (blessed) even in when being persecuted for righteousness' sake - being gentle in spirit, and kind as virtues, and clean in heart, and being peace makers, and by doing right they may be looked down on, they make looked at as disgraceful for having the desire to "do right" which is what righteousness is, and therefore when this is, theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. They are still accepted and loved by God, despite what people may think of them there is nothing wrong with doing what is right. It's not about seeking out "persecution" - that would be wrong to do "unrighteously to seek out a reaction to feel persecuted."
11 `Happy are ye whenever they may reproach you, and may persecute, and may say any evil thing against you falsely for my sake --
In the ninth step here, happy are those who may be reproached, or be persecuted, and they say evil things against you falsely for the sake of Christ. (Jesus was talking to his disciples at this time, and they were bound for death; so is the same for dying to oneself, and being buried with Christ, and being raised again with Christ in newness of life starting out being poor in spirit.

However, even so if you become persecuted, you could fall down the ladder, and become back poor in spirit, if you are not careful and it is an endless cycle of climbing and falling in the life of Christians, cause life is filled with trials and struggles, and suffer for Christ is not something that is desired by a majority of people.

Be honest before the Father, in Jesus christ name, and tell him everything going on from your happiness, to your frustration, to the dark secrets of your own heart. And continue to be reminded of these steps that are part of the Christians walk as one continues to go to the source of life Yeshua, the light of all mankind.
12 rejoice ye and be glad, because your reward [is] great in the heavens, for thus did they persecute the prophets who were before you.
