The Watchman’s Cry: Hearing the Shepherd Over the Noise

The Body of Believers today, face many challenges. Some are subtle, while others are serious distractions intended to lead them off the path where God never instructed them to walk. Believers seeking to understand specific aspects of the times in which we live - are often drawn toward popular Christian influencers, charismatic prophets, and movements that appear spiritual yet lack biblical plumb lines. These voices may speak with authority, use prophetic language, or display spiritual giftings, but they are voices among many, calling for attention and drawing believers away from Christ, the true Shepherd.
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” John 10:27

“The voice of a stranger they will not follow, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” John 10:5

Distracting Voices

Paul warned the leaders at Ephesus of both external and internal threats that will come.
“I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.” Acts 20:29-30

Believers must not assume that popularity, eloquence, or apparent gifting automatically equates to truth. Testing and discernment are essential, and Scripture must remain the measuring rod.
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God.” 1 John 4:1

When discernment is surrendered to personality, performance, or platform, spiritual immaturity deepens. The flock drifts from their first love into forms of idol worship, mistaking human influence for God’s guidance. Every believer is called to evaluate every teaching, every prophet, and every movement by the standards of God’s Word and the witness of Christ in their own hearts.

Imitation vs. Obedience in Prophecy

In Scripture, prophetic ministry was marked by obedience, godly accountability, and alignment with God’s revealed will. God reveals his plans only to those trained in covenant faithfulness.
“The Lord God does nothing unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.” Amos 3:7

Prophetic expression can be imitated easily: tone, style, and terminology can be copied. What cannot be copied is obedience, a personal relationship with God, and the weight of his word in the heart. Believers who take spiritual concepts and add to them without scriptural backing often fall into deception, motivated by personal ambition or fleshly desire.
“They speak a vision of their own heart, not from the mouth of the Lord.” Jeremiah 23:16

When believers focus on mimicking what others are doing rather than what God has already taught them, they can become impressed by outward appearances of spiritual activity. This fascination with performance draws them away from their quiet obedience to his will and leads to confusion rather than life-changing transformation.

The Shepherd is the Standard

The Body of Believers must return to Jesus as their true Shepherd. Spiritual gifts, including prophecy, exist to serve the body, to equip the saints, and to point believers to Jesus rather than to popular revelation with little or no biblical foundation.
“looking only at Jesus, the author and perfecter of the faith,” Hebrews 12:2

All ministry is meant to strengthen faith, not substitute for it. Followers of Christ are called to learn to hear his voice, test every word, and obey Scripture above all.
“Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” John 17:17

The ultimate test of any voice is its alignment with the character and testimony of Jesus.

The Watchman’s Charge

Believers must rise to discernment. The body of Christ cannot drift passively, drawn to every new teaching, influencer, rising star, or movement. The call is for vigilance, prayer, and discernment shaped by Scripture within these uncertain times.

Get to know Jesus Christ personally. Learn his voice. Test every spirit. Submit to the Word. Guard your charges, your ministry, or your flock, and guard your own heart with courage, humility, and diligence.

The hour is urgent. Every voice must be measured against Jesus and the Word of God. Every voice must be weighed by Scripture. The flock must not follow strangers but the Shepherd alone.
