It is amazing how difficult it can be to maintain our focus for any period of time without outside thoughts intruding. The exercise shows us how vulnerable we are to the world intruding upon the kingdom of heaven. But it becomes easier over time, and repetitive prayer such as the Jesus prayer or the one you mention can help us to maintain the focus for extended periods of time I think.
