I don't believe that debate in itself is a godly institution (Romans 1:29, 2 Corinthians 12:20-21); however it is important to also contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints when false teachers are purporting false doctrines right in front of you (Jude 1:3-4).
I know that seems contradictory in itself. But the seeming contradiction is reconciled in the attitude that we have in our attempts to convince the other of our pov. Are we apt to teach, and instructing those that oppose themselves in the spirit of meekness (2 Timothy 2:23-26)? or are we just trying to win an argument, so that we can be "right" whether we are actually speaking forth what is sound doctrine or not? The former is contending for the faith, mandated by scripture. The latter is debate, condemned by scripture.
That is why it is important to study to shew thyself approved (2 Timothy 2:15). If we do not know what we are even saying, for that we have not studied long enough to be at least at a medium level of expertise, it is better to shut up; and in that we might be counted wise (Proverbs 17:27-28).
