I googled this scripture and the above showed up.
Yet my Bible (King James) and my other Bible (New King James) have a complete different scripture in it.
So, we can we trust Google results?

    Just wondering.

Deuteronomy 8:18 King James Version (KJV)
18 But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

Well, everything comes to me from God....that I know! I mean I really know it...it's too obvious.
    It's quite wonderful...and humbling.

Yes, I am poor by the worlds standards, but it is deliberate - I want peace of mind and space to practice my sanctification.

    Amen

    Intetesting. The NAB reads:

Remember then, it is the LORD, your God, who gives you the power to acquire wealth, by fulfilling, as he has now done, the covenant which he swore to your fathers.

    Peace!

Here is the correct NJKV verse (from Bible Study Tools): 18 And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

Well that is God's truth, whether we like it or not. But that does not mean that there is no intelligent hard work necessary. And wealth is to be invested in the Kingdom of God and the service of Christ. That's the reason it is given.

Let's look at the way is is written in Hebrew.

    Deut. 8:18

The translation into the English... "for it is He who gives you power to get wealth,"...is better rendered "For He gives you power to make strong (like an army or being valourous).

To put this into perspective the biblical "ish chayil" means "a man of valour."

Also...this statement.... "that He may establish His covenant" is better rendered ..."in order to raise up His covenant"

So then this verse (Deut. 8:18) is speaking of God upping the ante (raising up) in a new covenant that is according to His power (grace). The "wealth" here is purely spiritual to give strength over all things in this life. The treasure is heavenly.

And in English the word "valour"...comes from the French "valeur" meaning "worth" (value)...or "worthy."

The new covenant is God giving us the power (grace) to make us worthy before God.

It amazes me that there is so much difference to be found in the various translations.
Up to the point that I prefer to stick to my King James Version.
Even the Lord's prayer has been butchered in the NIV version:
Missing is "For yours is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory forever, Amen"

And why change "Mary was a virgin" into "Mary was a good woman".

The NIV is NOT a translation! It is just a paraphrase, and a bad one at that. It's target audience are those low-IQ types who bow at the altar of gender-neutral political correctness.

Enoch>>"But that does not mean that there is no intelligent hard work necessary."

You are adding something to Scripture that Scripture does not say!! Don't do that!

From personal experience, I have great wealth, and it certainly did not come from intelligence or hard work. I see it as only a gift from God. For what reason, I have wondered? The only thing I can think of is because I have absolutely no love for money. I remember a while back, looking at my financial statements and exclaiming "How useless!!" I am lazy, I want to make life simpler. I have tried to reduce my top line by giving hundreds of thousands away, but it has been an exercise in futility. As quickly as I try to drain my assets out through the bottom end, it just keeps pouring in the top end faster than I can get rid of it!

My kids mock me because I buy all my clothes from WalMart, and keep my cars until they are 20 years old! None of my wealth makes any sense to me, other than that passage in Deuteronomy. Today I checked out the new residence I anticipate moving to. I already own the land. It is a patch in the local cemetery. :)

Interpreting Scripture is NOT the same as adding to Scripture. How many times do I have to say this? Christians are required to interpret Scripture, so unless you can prove FROM SCRIPTURE that no hard work is required, you should quit talking about *adding to Scripture*. DO YOU OR DO YOU NOT INTERPRET THE BIBLE?

Okay, I accept your spanking. :) But of course I do not believe your interpretation is correct.

    I hear that Gary,
I too stick close to my KJV even though I realize there are no perfect translations out there. I started on it and it just feels weird reading some of the other versions. Even so, I believe God will reveal despite any errors or omissions :)

Stan is the exception to the rule.

And since he correctly ruled out pennies, we have to go with Loonies (Canadian dollar coins).:p

Consider in this regard the words written by Solomon so rich and so wise:

"I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:
I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.
So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.
And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.
Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun." Ecc 2:7-11

That was Solomon and for all his riches and his wisdom, especially his wisdom, he saw no profit in it all. He saw no profit because he was looking with the wrong eyes. He stood with the "world" at his feet, but he was a fool for not applying God's wisdom, about which he wrote much, to himself.

Your riches, my friend, is in something better than the silver and gold of men... so manifest that or share that and leave the rest to God... Consider this poor man in the things of men, but....

"Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.
And he took him by the right hand, and lifted him up: and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength." Acts 3:6-7

"He that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch." Prov 11:28
