Matt 12:40
40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
KJV

John 11:9
9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
KJV

Since Jesus showed there are 12 hours in a "day", there has to be also 12 hours in a night. Thus one day and one night equals a 24 hour period, what we call a day.

Another thing that MUST be reckoned for that time, is the Hebrew reckoning for when the new day starts. Per their calendar it started at SUNDOWN and continued to the next sundown for a full day and night.

Lord Jesus was sacrificed as the Passover Lamb. The Old Testament requirement when the Passover was to be sacrificed was at evening on the 14th of Nissan. Jesus was crucified at evening, just prior to sundown when the Passover would begin, which was a "high day", meaning a Sabbath. So they rushed to bury His body before sundown. Sundown thus began the first 'night'.

Wednesday crucifixion; burial just prior to sundown.

Sundown Wednesday to dawn, sundown began Thursday, 1st night.

Dawn Thursday to sundown Thursday, 1st day.

Thursday sundown to Friday dawn, 2nd night.

Dawn Friday to Friday sundown, 2nd day.

Friday sundown to Saturday dawn, 3rd night.

Dawn Saturday to Saturday sundown, 3rd day.

Saturday at sundown to Sunday dawn, Sunday night into morning, Jesus rose from the dead.

Another thing believers on Jesus Christ should know, is that the word "Easter" in the KJV of Acts 12:4 is a mistranslation. The actual word in the manuscript text is from the Aramaic and is pascha, which means the Passover. Look it up in your Strong's Exhaustive Concordance if you don't believe me. It is Strong's no. NT:3957.

Easter originally was a PAGAN sexual fertility day observed by the pagan idol worshipers. It is from the word Ishtar.

When many of the pagan's converted to Jesus, they used the name Easter for the Christian Passover instead. It then became a Church tradition.

There is... a CHRISTIAN PASSOVER also, and not just the Orthodox Jew's Passover.

1 Cor 5:7
7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even
Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
KJV

That is Apostle Paul saying the above per The New Covenant. Lord Jesus Christ is our Christian Passover Lamb sacrificed for us.

Lord Jesus was sacrificed to the day and hour required for the Passover lamb per the Book of Exodus 12.

This is why the 3 days and 3 nights Jesus said His body would be in the tomb work out to show His body was sacrificed on a Wednesday at evening just prior sundown, which would begin the "high day" of Passover. In that week there were TWO sabbaths. The first day of Passover was to be a sabbath, and then beginning at Friday sundown to Saturday sundown would be the regular weekly sabbath. That is how many have gotten confused about the two Marys having to wait until Sunday to visit Jesus' tomb and finish His burial with spices and such. It was because the regular weekly sabbath at Saturday sundown had just ended. But the Passover "high day", which was to be an extra sabbath that week, began at sundown starting Thursday. Thursday was the "high day" (John 19:31).
