Matt 12:40
40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
KJV
John 11:9
9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
KJV
Since Jesus showed there are 12 hours in a "day", there has to be also 12 hours in a night. Thus one day and one night equals a 24 hour period, what we call a day.
Another thing that MUST be reckoned for that time, is the Hebrew reckoning for when the new day starts. Per their calendar it started at SUNDOWN and continued to the next sundown for a full day and night.
Lord Jesus was sacrificed as the Passover Lamb. The Old Testament requirement when the Passover was to be sacrificed was at evening on the 14th of Nissan. Jesus was crucified at evening, just prior to sundown when the Passover would begin, which was a "high day", meaning a Sabbath. So they rushed to bury His body before sundown. Sundown thus began the first 'night'.
Wednesday crucifixion; burial just prior to sundown.
Sundown Wednesday to dawn, sundown began Thursday, 1st night.
Dawn Thursday to sundown Thursday, 1st day.
Thursday sundown to Friday dawn, 2nd night.
Dawn Friday to Friday sundown, 2nd day.
Friday sundown to Saturday dawn, 3rd night.
Dawn Saturday to Saturday sundown, 3rd day.
Saturday at sundown to Sunday dawn, Sunday night into morning, Jesus rose from the dead.
