In this case the word was God's declaration to John. We do not know what exactly that declaration was, but John started his ministry at that time. Judging from his message and the prophecy about John in Isaiah 40:3; applied to him at Jn 1:23 it was likely that the message revealed Jesus as the foretold Messiah. That is just my opinion however, I have no evidence of that being the case.
