Strong delusion has stood in the way of many seeing Christ return now for millennia.
Many have not taken to heart that Jesus said He stands (present tense) at the door and knock and whoever opens the door He will come to, into. Paul elaborated if not elude to this, saying He would come, "but each one in his own order (individually)." Contrary to this, false teachers entering into the early church, not seeing Christ return again as a man, began to believe that Jesus' "soon" return would not be "soon", but would be at some grand, final, mass, event rather than "but each one in his own order" when Jesus came knocking "within" each individual person as He said. This was the "lie" Paul foretold that was to be believed, and has been believed by many ever since.
The good news is-- no one has to continue in the "lie." Unfortunately, many prefer the "lie" and therefore, as many of these past centuries have, will miss out on His return while they "are alive and remain" in the world, and die before they see Him. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
If you want to get down to it, we still have a long ways to go with the anti-christ and all that stuff in Revelation.
Don't worry about it. Just focus on what making it to heaven and what is in your control.
