As a child we had a bible in our house, a black covered one that nobody ever read. When I went to my secondary school I need a bible as part of my 'kit' so I was given a small KJV with pictures. I tried to read them but both were KJV and as boring as old dust. The only thing I remember was being made to write out 'Ur of the Chaldeans' 100 hundred times because i wasn't listening.
When I heard about Jesus and about the God of the OT from a children's evangelist now that was interesting and kick started me on my way to salvation. And then when, as a new Christian, I bought a Good News bible I was at last able to understand a lot of it.
Good news bible is a good one. Doesn’t it have some drawn pictures in it? There was a Baptist preacher who showed me a room that was scattered full of bibles, laying around on chairs and some on the floor. The first one I grabbed was a big yellow looking bible and which is if correct the same one you might have had, he sat with me in the hall where they have teaching or preaching, and showed me about the book of Jonah, and it had little drawn picture of a man getting swallowed by a man. Very rememberable part of God working in my life though I never knew him even then.
