I remember when Uncle Sam flew me on a chartered commercial jet from California to Saigon in 1964. When we took off from California it was dark. At a brief re-fueling stop in Hawaii it was dark. When we landed at Manila it was still dark. The difficulty was of course that we were slowing down the arrival of the dawn [sunrise] travelling at a few hundred miles per hour. It was likely the longest night of my life [if darkness is night]. In Manila we refueled again but had to wait a couple more hours until daylight as we were not allowed to land in Saigon in the darkness. When we were landing at Saigon, that big jet liner nose dived sharply to land instead of taking the long slow incline we usually experience at peaceful domestic airports.
