"Devout Catholics, meanwhile, observe Ash Wednesday by fasting, abstinence from meat, and repentance - a day of contemplating one's transgressions."

1 Tim.4
[1] Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
[2] Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
[3] Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

God's word never forbids marrage, nor eating meats.

Sure it does. It forbids marriage to certain "women." It also forbids certain meats. That hasn't changed. This should be seen both literally and spiritually.

Does the Catholic church follow God's Word...does the Baptist, does the Episcopalian, does the Evangelical, does the, does the, does the???

1 Timothy 4

How would this apostasy develop? It would grow up gradually in the early church. It would gain its impetus from greedy and ambitious worldly "bishops", who had forgotten (or never learned) the admonitions of Paul (1Ti 3:1-7).

"For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ" (Jude 1:4; cf 2Pe 2:1).

Greek philosophy and the Gnostic mysteries were embraced by some leaders in the early church. There was (and still is) something appealing about the mysterious. Since many of the converts were of this persuasion before baptism, they would perhaps bring with them into the early church doctrines other than the Truth. Another element which led to the adulteration of the Truth was the teaching of the Judaizers (Acts 15:1; Gal 5:1-3; Rev 2:9). This was warned against by Paul (Gal 1:6-9; 1Ti 1:4-7). Several years before, when Paul had spoken personally to the elders of Ephesus, he had told them this:

"Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them" (Acts 20:30).

We could go onto speak of the two apostate systems (Greek-Roman paganism and corrupted Judaism) -- and where their roots are today, but this may cause offence, so I will leave it here for now.

Only to say this...

"In the latter times many shall depart from the faith." Hence the exhortation: "Examine yourselves (to see) whether ye be in the faith" (2Co 13:5).
