There are excellent youtube videos that delve into "In Group Preferences." The dynamic is not limited to race or sex but even species and higher up the biological classification. Hence, the expression "Birds of a feather flock together." Groups that do not have an in-group preference - say to prove they are not racist, sexist or Islamophobic - always lose to groups that do.
