Luk 9:51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,
Luk 9:52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.
Luk 9:53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
Luk 9:54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?
Luk 9:55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
Luk 9:56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.

What manner of spirit..
9:55 Some manuscripts add an expanded conclusion to verse 55 and an additional sentence in verse 56: And he said, “You don’t realize what your hearts are like. 56For the Son of Man has not come to destroy people’s lives, but to save them.”

There are 19 different Bible versions of this one sentence.
And 9 of them either omit "Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of"
Or, 10 of them add it.

Luke 9 :: King James Version (KJV)

questions:

What did Jesus mean by this statement?

(the first thing came to mind was the "messengers" angels going to Sodom, and the Lord is standing talking to Abraham)

What does the original translation actually say?
Does it omit or add this statement?

Thank You
Hugs

What manner of spirit indeed?

They were walking with Jesus, but it is apparent that they were Not OF the same manner or sort of Spirit that Jesus was!

[Could that tell us anything about people who belong to churches today, but do not really know anything about their Head or who their head is supposed to be? They follow apparently their own heads rather than Jesus... or so it seems.]

What do we know about what spirit or Spirit we are of? What if any difference is there between what we are now and what we were before we first came to God? [How is Holy Spirit involvement making a difference?]

Was then there a spirit of which we were, whereas now are we or are we supposed to be of the Holy Spirit?

Once a person really been baptized in the Holy Spirit, does he still have a choice of walking in the Spirit of the new man [giving the Holy Spirit the dominion] or walking in the previous spirit of the old man[giving that old spirit of the flesh or of death the dominion]? Hmmm?

"This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would" Gal 5:16-17

The spirit or the flesh [death]:

"Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God." Gal 5:19-21

The Spirit of God or the Holy Spirit [of Life]:

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts." Gal 5:22-24

"If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." Gal 5:25

Of as Paul wrote elsewhere:

"Quench not the Spirit." I Thess 5:19

In Samaria walking with Jesus, the disciples, James and John, did not have the Spirit of God in them yet. Fortunately they did have Jesus to lead them and direct them. Of the 12, 11 allowed Jesus to lead and direct, but Judas showed us that it was not required for a person to submit to that leadership and direction.

Do we have the same choice with regard to the Holy Spirit today?
