The Lord Jesus influenced people to cut out the non-inspired books which is why we have the 66 books we have right now.
To say Jesus is not capable of controlling what goes in His canon is to have no faith in Him or His standing as God, being the faithful High Priest over His House.
This is where religious people with all their man made tradition and carnal minded religious training / commentaries lose their marbles because they really don't think Jesus can control what is in God's Word.
So their argument is actually against the Lord and they create strife between themselves and the Lord by accusing Him of not being powerful or capable enough to control what's in His canon which is not what people that Love the Lord do

The NT is the same universally.
It is the OT that is longer by some and did Christ Jesus cut it down to size during the reformation... probably, but I have never read or heard from anyone or anything that tells us it is wrong to not know of the things that are not in the four corners of the 66 books that Protestants go by.

Do what? The Lord chose to not move anybody to include these writings in His canon... so this is not part of God's inspired Word. So, these writings are just like reading a book a well known preacher in our day has written.
It may have some value to it, but God's Word is still the standard that all other sources of information is judged by.
I, personally, feel it wrong to not seek to know what else is out there from the gnostic gospels to my new found interest in the YLT.....
Y'all can follow the 66 exclusively if you all want to but which translation? There are variances among many that certainly can and will direct thoughts differently as to meaning.
One specific... 2 Timothy 2:15 ....
the following list is from bible hub

(in many of them) You must go and check things out as you can because if relying on just the 66 books you may be relying on ... while not a misdirection... but a statement written as it was not intended.
