Experience has shown that many Believers, even after 50 years of external exercise, are void of God. They are also full of themselves, having nothing of the true spiritual man except the name. But there is another spiritual man, the one who has passed beyond the beginning and walks toward the inner way. Such Believers withdraw into the inward parts of their spirits, and there relinquish everything about themselves into the hands of God. With an uplifted face and an uplifted soul, they come into the presence of their Lord, having collected their entire consciousness and centered all their being in one place -- on Him.
In seasons of desolation or in seasons of temptation learn to withdraw into the inmost chamber of your spirit. There, do nothing but behold God. It is in the depth of your spirit that is the place of true happiness. It is there that the Lord will show you wondrous things.
Keep silent and let your conversation be something that is internal. Deny and put to death your self-nature by not judging ill of anyone at any time. Your suspicion of your neighbor troubles the purity of your heart; suspicion and criticism disquiet the heart; they bring the believer out of the realm of the spirit and take away his rest. You will never be fully resigned to the will of God if you are troubled by human opinion of you, or if you make for yourself a little idol of what people say.
A person who has died to his self-nature cannot be hurt or injured by someone else. Nothing can disturb you. Nothing can affront you. All things will come to an end.
Lift your voice. There is still a song in you. The battle is not writing your ending. The enemy does not get the final word. Your circumstances do not get the final word. God does.
Your praise is not a denial of what you are facing. It is a declaration that what you are facing is not greater than the God you serve. So praise Him while the wall is still standing. Praise Him while you are waiting for the answer. Praise Him when you cannot yet see the way forward. Praise Him when you don't understand the process. Praise Him because He is worthy. And praise Him because faith believes that God is working even when our natural eyes cannot yet see the evidence.
