We will be judged but will we be tortured eternally?

Judgement Day makes perfect sense to me. It means we don't get away with anything really.
It means there is justice, and the unrepentant monsters of this world will have to answer.
Judgement Day gives meaning to our current life on earth. Otherwise we can cave in to the flesh, and there will be no price to pay. We can do whatever we like. Ignore morality. That's for losers.
But I have a problem with eternal punishment. It makes no sense to me.
We send prisoners to jail for life. But part of that rationale is to protect the community. Do we send baddies to Hell forever to protect those in Heaven? No of course not. What is God's reason for eternal punishment? I suspect God doesn't mean this. Even to torture Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot and all the rest forever, makes no sense to me. Just end their life. Forget them. Remove them from History so they get no more attention. So we never use them as a yardstick for evil anymore.
Not to deflect my own sins. I will have to pay a price. I will be judged. Judgement is fair. I just pray for a suitable punishment. A constructive punishment. One that helps me wake up. I might mention purgatory here. But of course many don't believe this exists.
