Every individual has an individual reason for getting their ears pierced or getting tattoos.... it's a personal choice. I believe in personal choice.
And some will maintain their style and others will change.

@Ziggy Yes, it's an individual thing, isn't it? Some ppl do think that it's something recent, but historically it's been widespread; e.g., in the 19th century:

"...one of the major resurgences of interest in tattoos in Europe occurred among 19th century high society Victorian women (as well as men), after British explorers .. brought back the practice to Britain. .. [It] grew during the 19th century, and even Winston Churchill’s mother had a tattoo .. on her wrist. Queen Victoria was also believed to have had a tattoo of a Bengal tiger.. . From Victorian Europe, the craze spread to America. In 1897, (art critic, Margot) Miffin says that an estimated 75% of American society women were tattooed.."

(Black Fire: Women, Tattoos, and the Transformative Power of Body Art )

It's very widespread again now, including in the Bible Belt:

Around here (Bible Belt), it is common, especially among evangelical Christians, for the girls under about 40 to have religious tattoos. More do than don't, especially when you get to the under 30 crowd. I hardly know any female at church that is under 30 that does not have a tattoo.

Clearly there's nothing new about it when it's attested historically, including among Victorian women, and maybe if more Christians that might be considering the personal choice of faith based inkings - Bible verses, etc. - they might hesitate less if they knew for example just how widespread it was in the 19th century.

(All the young Christians - male and female - with Bible verses tattooed with whom I have spoken seem to have had them done for evangelistic reasons, anyhow...)

Good morning my DEAR BROTHER @farouk ... Blessings on you.

@Addy Good morning...again....

Anyway a while ago Heart2Soul said:
I think tattoos can be an opportunity for ministry.....it opens up a door to talk about Jesus.
..I think it would be a great opportunity to witness and to share Jesus and to discover what message the person hopes to convey with their art.

Since it seems that so many young Christians get faith based tattoos - and all the young people with Bible verses tattooed that I have spoken with seem to have had them done for evangelistic reasons - I do wonder about the viability of more Christian tattoo parlors...?

.. and if I was younger... I might even get a little one that says... IT IS FINISHED.

@Addy This made me think of you:

My daughter got a rather large tattoo across her forearm that says "Tetelestai". I may have spelled that wrong but it is the last words Jesus said…"It is finished." People are always asking her what that means. She has a chance to tell them about Jesus. I can't very well be against that!

Well goodness, I hope so! Else I wouldn’t ever expect to see my sister again! I would have, by now, if not for this stupid pandemic. Ug! And Australia is fully locked down at the moment. I’m fully vaccinated, but can’t expect to go anywhere until at least the end of October. And you know what I think about pronouncements coming from Politicians? Weather forecasts are more reliable. So, I’ll believe we’re actually coming out of lockdown, when we’re actually out of lockdown.

@Naomi25 You guys down there have been in winter, whereas up here in summer things have opened up a lot. At the beginning of this year we had more restrictions.

Up here, they have opened up the tattoo parlors again... :)

I think Farouk likes the feeling of getting stabbed with a needle.
I can see him rolling around in a field with a porcupine. Lol

Yes, we have been in winter, although we’ve just begun seeing some lovely Spring weather.
As far as ‘opening up’…I despair that we ever will. We have ever tightening restrictions….tattoo parlours would be, I imagine, very low on the list of ‘essentials’ at the moment. So many people are struggling with their businesses. Honestly, it just feels like it will never end, and the government keeps moving the goal posts. The ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ was that everything would open up in October. Then it was “everything will open up in October to fully vaccinated people”. Now it’s “fully vaccinated people will have an easing of restrictions when the population gets to 70%”….whenever that will be. No one knows anything…even the people in charge, it feels like. They’re just making it up as they go along, and everyone feels like we’re witnessing a slow moving train wreck.
So…no…I doubt the poor tattooists are doing much business at present.

I do like the idea of Christian based tattoos to dispel the reputation given to those with tattoos in the past by some in society.

@Heart2Soul I guess some ppl who are critical just don't realize simply how prevalent it was in the 19th century among the upper classes:

"...one of the major resurgences of interest in tattoos in Europe occurred among 19th century high society Victorian women (as well as men), after British explorers .. brought back the practice to Britain. .. [It] grew during the 19th century, and even Winston Churchill’s mother had a tattoo .. on her wrist. Queen Victoria was also believed to have had a tattoo of a Bengal tiger.. . Since right down to the most conservative types - as GodsGrace says - it's now what they seem to do, it seems to be so widely what young Christians seem as well to use.

Just cause its prevalent in the world , dont make it acceptable to GOD . Let us all always remember that .
There will be many things that are PREVALENT in this world , and rest assured that dont make it acceptable to GOD .

@jessiblue Well, this is my experience, anyway, when talking to young ppl: all who have gotten Bible verses tattooed seem to have had them done for evangelistic reasons.

Sometimes ppl might start with a tiny Christian fish sign <>< on a wrist or foot; others might proceed to a Bible verse or ref. The general context is really the process of reaching adulthood when girls become women and boys become men; and so the Christians often want to express something they really deeply believe, anyway.

But what God are they following . Many folks can lip JESUS and even say this or that , I WAS ONE OF THEM ONCE
Most christains are following another JESUS , a sensual spirit , their own desires . Just remember that .
This generation is the same generation that has no idea on how to truly witness the gospel .
I never seen anything like this in all my days . Never . They can sing the name of JESUS ,
they can even cry and weep with those who sorrow , YET THEY HAVE NO IDEA who THE TRUE JESUS IS
WHO GOD IS . THEY are following a LETS BE ONE spirit and they know it not . THE ALL INCLUSIVE SPIRIT has tainted many now .
THEY Live for EMOTIONS and NOT TRUTH . THEIR TRUTH is only what THEY THINK IS RELEVANT .
They live for the next big feeling , BUT NEVER FOR GOD , NEVER FOR CHRIST , NEVER FOR TRUTH . ITS bad my friend . AND I MEAN
its truly bad . Most folks within Christendom itself have no idea what they have lost , nor do they even know they ARE STILL LOST .
ITS bad and I AM GONNA WARN . THOUGH this warning has cost me . I must not cease to warn , no matter how hated i am .

Oh I agree that ppl can be misled for all sorts of reasons.

I guess that when I have talked to a young woman or a young man who have painstakingly had all the working of John 3.16 tattooed, I can at least respect their very strong desire to testify.

@Truman the Levite :)

Some ppl do seem to find it a joyful testimony experience, anyway...

Acolyte said:
My son had 7 or 8 tattoos before I even thought about it. ... Those who get scripture must be overjoyed. The money and pain are outweighed by the message they witness to... No more ink for me. ... I do think they are fine for whoever wants one. It's just not something I would do again.:)

Some Christians would thus say that in the end a joyful testimony experience is what it's all about.

But you don't enjoy the pain of actually getting a tattoo...or do you?
I mean, if you do, then I guess that's your thing...what's it to me, eh? Lol

Well, I guess the point is that some Christians who have it done in faith based designs might not necessarily experience a great deal of exhilaration from the inking procedure as the chosen design takes shape, but they might receive an ongoing quiet satisfaction that the faith expression - Bible verse or phrase or Christians fish sign <>< - is being an effective talking point or matter for thought among other people on a regular or occasional basis.

This is what Dr. Beth S., MD, said: "Embracing the pain For many tattoo enthusiasts, the pain is an important part of the process. Controlling the pain is less important than feeling it, accepting it, and embracing the endorphin rush that pain brings.
If it's your first tattoo, the pain can be a rite of passage. Some people see it as a fair price to pay to wear permanent, beautiful, meaningful art. Some even enjoy it as an important part of the tattooing..l." From 'Controlling the pain with tattooing', https://tattoos.lovetoknow.com/Controlling_the_Pain
