I used to have substance abuse issues in my life.
The 12-step program says one will always be an addict.
I haven't misused my medication in 17 years.
I've outgrown my past issues.
The 12-step program says I cannot successfully use my medication...they are clearly wrong.
Studies have shown that in the long-term, 12-step involvement is no more successful than recovery with no treatment.
The teachings of the 12-steps are called suggestions. They are implemented like laws.
I could go on, but what's the point. If the 12-steps work for you, great. If you disagree with me, fine. If you want to know the facts, do your own research. Overall, the 12-step program has had a destructive impact on my life.
True discipleship is what I needed.
I can for sure see why it had such a destructive impact on your life . IT AINT JESUS CHRIST CENTERED AT ALL .
Its just wordly wisdom given unto folks that often leads to the prayer they do .
THEY pray to a HIGHER POWER , As they call it . But i dont see any pointing to JESUS at all . Rather to our own means
on how to heal ourselves . CLING TO THE GLORIOUS LORD JESUS MY FRIEND . HE alone is our only hope , our only salvation .
HE is with the lambs . Let all praise the glorious Lord .

Celebrate Recovery and Overcomers are "Christian" groups where Jesus is the higher power. However, they go by carved-in-stone rules that don't allow for the transformational power of the Holy Spirit. A law, if you will.

Praise, praise, praise, praise...praise to the One who sent us His Son.
Praise, praise, praise, praise...in one accord, we praise You, Oh Lord.
All gory and honor and praises.

I agree with everything in this post, Truman. I relate very much to what you say and I have been trying to explain this to people regarding the 12 step program for years. In a way, you always live in the past when you are involved with it. Whereas, in Christ, our old self is crucified (Romans 6:6).

Would you mind sharing the book you mentioned in one of your above posts? Including author...I wasn't able to find it online. This is a topic that I am very much interested in and wish to do further research on - recovery in Christ.

It's been a difficult road for me to get to where I am today regarding the 12-step program. Things started turning around for me in March, 2000 when I attended a 5-day retreat that taught, "The Divine Plumbline" seminar and Derek Prince's "Freedom From The Curse" and "Basics Of Deliverance." These are from the bible and have been effective in me through the power of the Holy Spirit.
A companion book to The Divine Plumbline is called The Walls Of My Heart and was written by Dr. Bruce Thompson. When all else failed, and believe you me, I tried many things, this worked. Though God allowed the rock to fall on me, grind me to powder, and lay bare my foundation in preparation for the program. In retrospect, I see that for a season, I had the opportunity to fall on the rock, but chose not to.
He is so-o-o faithful!
This song talks about the process that I went through.

Thank you for sharing this, rest assured I will look into it.

He too never left me in my darkest days of addiction. There is great significance and healing power in suffering and sorrow, edification is the key here. God is faithful and He always provides an escape from our temptations (1 Corinthians 10:13). God bless you, that you may stay grounded in your foundation of rock the rest of your days...

It was nice to talk with other Christians in a non judgemental/Christian atmosphere. Because Christians struggle too.

Believe me this is not being judgmental . But rick warren and his purpose driven life , it really
messed the church up real bad . I just thought you should know this dear sister .

I disagree. It really helped me out in a tough time... But thanks for sharing your thoughts. What is it you disagree with?

I recently went to church for the first time in 13 years. I'd left previously over the abuse I'd received while attending a Celebrate Recovery group.
When I showed up at a new church a few months ago, I hadn't cut any hair on my body for awhile as I felt led not to...kinda like "sticking my toe in the water" to acclimatize myself to my recently discovered Hebrew ancestry, and I admit, I probably looked like I'd been living in the wilderness for some time. It was a sign of my consecration to the Lord.
I was asked if I'd been a biker, to which I said something like, "No, I've never ridden." Someone mentioned something about the church's 12-step group and I thought attending it may help get me off the last bit of my nicotine habit. And I wanted to hang out. So I went.
I addressed the group.
I briefly told my story, including my health issues and the life-saving support I've received over the years from my physician. After vilifying doctors, the leader responded by saying, "Yeah, I've used that story myself a few times." For the first time in a few years, I had to use my nitro-glycerin. For an angina attack.
After making it clear that I was there for my one addiction, that being nicotine, prayer was given for my addictions. I bought a book for $20. It said that if one had, in their past, abused a certain medication, it was impossible for them to ever use is properly again. It also said that if one did use it, they were indulging in sinful pleasure and needed to repent of it.
"Don't you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man `unclean. ' For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. Matthew 15: 17,18,19
While at that meeting, I was instructed that using prostitutes was not a big deal. "But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people." - Ephesians 5:3
I later noticed that "American Idol" was on a monitor.
Look, I'm not going to condemn anyone because I know that sanctification is a process of repentance (not excuses). But when my take-away from one night is that what one puts in their body makes one unclean but sexual lust coming from the heart is not a big deal, and that it's okay to be entertained, as I saw the leaders doing, by the world, well, I know it's time to move on.
"…24You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. 25Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, so that the outside may become clean as well.…" Matthew 23:24-26

It aint accusing to warn my friend . That group you walked into sounds like they are in dire and grave danger .
Dire and grave danger .
Dire and grave danger .
Dire and grave danger .
The gift of discernment is not a sin . When bad fruits are spotted to warn against it , IS NOT A SIN .
IF so , paul and every other apostel was in dire grave danger . NO , its this world that is in dire and grave danger .
STICK to the biblical pattern . ITS the only and i mean ONLY pattern that is gonna work .

The 12-steps are based on scripture...so was the written code.
The 12-steps, in my opinion, can be a helpful start...not to be turned into law.
It is a self-help (amateur volunteer-ran) program of suggestions...I suggest anyone involved in it not lose sight of this.

Years back i was assigned AA by the courts . I went there . I was not a follower of JESUS , but i remember
the deadly dangers taught . THEY did not teach JESUS , they instead taught GOD as a higher power , WHICH INCLUDES EVERY RELIGOIN .
It was bad news then and its bad news now . Surrender to a HIGHER POWER . I wish the twelve steps had said
SURRENDER TO JESUS CHRIST , FOR HE ALONE IS YOUR ONLY HOPE .

Similar in ways perhaps to the advice that people give on this forum. Their intentions may always be good ones, but that does not mean we should follow after them blindly. Any man with the best of intentions may still makes mistakes. Each of us needs to follow the Master himself!
Always remember here Paul's own warning:

"Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ." I Cor 11:1

It did say that originally, but since followers of false religions were attending, it was changed.
