Hello all. Is there a difference between these two? I have a besetting sin that i have been desperately trying to beat for the last couple of years, nothing has worked so far. Tonite i heard a catholic priest (no, im not catholic, just desperate) say to confess your sin, and then to renounce your sin in the name of Jesus. So i did tonite. Are they the same thing, or is there a difference?

Renunciation is a verbal declaration of your intent to not do that sin anymore and to put it behind you, that it is dead to you and you to it. Repentance is turning away from sin with contrition and not doing it again, and contains an inward renunciation in that you have turned from it, but not necessarily a verbal one, it is chiefly an act of the whole life in which you have changed your mind and direction about life. Renouncing can help repenting but they are not the same, that is my understanding.

Perhaps ask God to give you a hatred for the sin...to show you how much it hurts Him when you do it.
Godly sorrow leads to true repentance, which leads to lasting change. Remember, He loves you!
Renouncing is speaking out your intention to turn away from a certain behavior.
It is my understanding and experience that repentance is a process.

If you really are a "Lifelong sinner" as you claim, then you don't know the Truth that will set you free. John 8:32-36. Jesus came to TAKE AWAY our sin and make us sinless. That is the desire to sin, so what He does is takes away our carnal nature that produces the sin you seem to love. I was there 44 years ago when I loved a married man and didn't want to give him up, even for God. So I prayed that this is a sin I have no desire to give up, so please - You are stronger than I am, You do it. Please make this man break up with me, and then give him the strength to stay away from me when I try to get him back." This is called honest repentance. Admitting how weak my nature was. One week later my lover broke up with me. And two weeks later God showed me a vision, and spoke to me, and then baptized me in the Holy Spirit. I was shocked. But God did it all because of integrity of heart. You are not going to be able to give up that carnal desire on your own. Jesus is going to have to kill the desire by nailing it to the cross and freeing you completely from your carnal nature. It is called being born again.

Romans 6 tells us a truth - we are dead to sin. But further in the chapter Paul tells us to also reckon (believe and call) yourself dead to sin. You call yourself a lifelong sinner. You are shooting yourself in the foot.

Remember when we are tempted, that is a long way from actually sinning. And God always shows his own a way of escape. James 1:14-15. Start believing the truth, for the truth will set you free. John 8:32-36

You can renounce a sin without repenting. Repenting is what we need to do.

yes, and you can also seem to brag about a sin that you are confessing to, with no remorse. My ex seemed to want me to feel sorry for HIM when he confessed to having raped one of the members of his home church who was a virgin that he pastored. There are some sick in the head fake Christians out there. He blamed it all on friends of his parents who wife swapped with them every weekend, and abused him. He took no responsibility.

Renouncing: acknowledging fully that this is a bad thing.
Repenting: turning one's heart away from it (which is 100% done with Christ's power).

Some sins are very difficult quarries and/or addictive. We find ourself caught in them again and again. That doesn't mean that there isn't repentance, just that there is th need for continual repentance. The transformation process from wretch to glorified in Christ is a lifetime+ transformation.

Keep praying about it to The Father in Christ Jesus' name. He will eventually help you overcome it if you are sincere with Him.
