... refused to baptize my grandmother for wearing earrings. ... I have a tattoo and a nose piercing. ... I think the cult like mission is to keep the women dowdy and rob their confidence.
@FluffyYellowDuck

While it seems obvious that a lady with the simple confidence to have earrings in and a bit of inking can be Godly and modest and with interest in prayer and the Scriptures, yet it's true that legalistic rules can really distort some ppl's appreciation of reality, right?

There is a friend of mine who, before becoming a Christian, got a devil's head tattoo that covers half his neck and part of his face. He tried for a while to figure out something to do with it, but couldn't. He was able to modify some of the others, but not That one.

Yikes!

That's the problem with tattoos, they don't just go away!

Much love!

@marks Kind of depends, in a sense, how much modifying an existing tattoo is doable.

Like, for example, if a woman that is soundly converted and walking with the Lord has a tattoo of the name of an ex-bf ("BILL", etc.), she would likely not want to spend the rest of her life looking at it; and so she might well want to go back to the tattoo parlor and have an artist change "BILL" into "BIBLE", etc., or whatever.....

But like you say, it would depend on the feasibility of tattoo modifications.

I see both men and women, boys and girls with tats. Don't typically have but a fleeting notice ...
A womanly thing? ....
@Taken In some parts of the world - Middle East, for example? - getting one's wrist tattooed with a cross is a widespread custom for young women from a professedly Christian background to do; the rationale is to insulate them from the unwanted attentions of men from widely differing religious backgrounds. I guess the term womanly can be subjective (but anyway in this context one can see how some ppl would think it a strongly desirable thing to do....)

Cultural traditions pertaining to men, women, and children certainly are varied around the world. I do not particularly care for tats, nor do I think I would much like living in the middle east, or numerous other regions.

@Abaxvahl

What with your recent link about Bosnians;

What with the discussion earlier today where it was pointed out that in some parts of the world - Middle East, for example? - getting one's wrist tattooed with a cross is a widespread custom for young women from a professedly Christian background to do; the rationale is to insulate them from the unwanted attentions of men from widely differing religious backgrounds (and one could also readily understand if young women's parents would encourage them to have it done);

...and the example of the quote about the Victorian era: ....

"...one of the major resurgences of interest in tattoos in Europe occurred among 19th century high society Victorian women (as well as men), after British explorers .. brought back the practice to Britain. .. [It] grew during the 19th century, and even Winston Churchill’s mother had a tattoo .. on her wrist. Queen Victoria was also believed to have had a tattoo of a Bengal tiger.. . From Victorian Europe, the craze spread to America. In 1897, (art critic, Margot) Miffin says that an estimated 75% of American society women were tattooed.."

(Black Fire: Women, Tattoos, and the Transformative Power of Body Art )

....

I just don't get that it's supposedly not a womanly thing to do (whatever individual preferences may indeed be).

We’re very much hoping to be able to catch up after Christmas…
@Naomi25 ...and I'm sure in any case when you guys do meet up, her tattoo will at the very least be of secondary interest compared with everything else that you guys 'catch up' on....

(Even though her new tattoo will likely peak some curiosity.... :) right?)

My daughter wanted to do this that is be a tattoo artist several years ago and are sadly discouraged her. I’ve considered speaking with her about this, I believe person can hold a ministry in any occupation, if I do it to the glory of God
@Waiting on him So has she talked about it lately?

(...or maybe she's too busy getting on with her other interests and commitments?)

She’s actually taking a class at the moment in acrylic nails. She’s very talented at this as well. Maybe you could launch a new poll. ( are acrylic nails appropriate in church)?

@Waiting on him So why don't you start such a poll? :)

She would probably find tattoos / even ear piercings etc., more satisfying in the long run; but I know it's hard to get into a business, right?

@FluffyYellowDuck As per your other comment, some ppl's tattoos are of course longstanding; while if a young believer at around 18 opts to have his or her first ink in the form of an evangelistic Bible verse, then this is a kind of signal to show what sort of values he or she wishes to follow in adult life, right?

I suppose... My guess would be it would show some form of dedication.

I honestly have to say I probably was about 22 when I got mine... I don't have any big regrets on it, but I wouldn't again.

I'm just too old now and don't really care for it.

@FluffyYellowDuck Everyone is different, right?

I guess that what they would say is that it's a way of expressing what they really believe and feel strongly.

Other posters have pointed out how widespread it is and who does it:

FHII said:
Probably 75% of the congregation have tattoos, including myself and the Pastor ..I also agree that it makes a statement of freedom in Christ.

GodsGrace said:
almost every young girl I know has some sort of tatoo.
Even those very conservative types.

Since it's such a widely used thing that so many conservative people do, it seems like it's a way of expressing what they deeply believe and want to be identified with (if this makes sense?)

@FluffyYellowDuck You know of course what your own preferences are; as per post #1, various quotes show that people way older have gotten their first ink. I myself had a design which faded on my arm and was not successful; no I'm not a journalist.

Do you ever see tattoo parlor portfolios - not with a view to getting more ink but simply in appreciation of the artwork?

Be careful in claiming other's motives . . . you may not realize what is in someone's heart . . .

Much love!
@marks I think your comment also applies here re. all the Christian young people with Bible verses tattooed, for which some legalistic ppl try to give them a hard time, but who may have had them done with the desire to testify in their hearts.

Point taken! Still, my concern is not over a "right/wrong" but one of harm.

Much love!

there are lots of good artists in my area.
@Mantis Similarly to the comments on the other thread, I think those tattoo artists would also agree that their work is a small amount of real insight and inspiration, while so much of it is the sheer business of hard work and toil...

Often its the tattooee that is heartened by the seeming unique artwork acquired; for the tattoo artist, however, it's more of a matter of hard work for remuneration.

(You would likely appreciate this more than most...)
