People who try to coach others to speak in tongues are likely in error themselves, but let us throw out the gift of God because of some men's errors!

I have done both. That is I have learned foreign languages through my own efforts and study as well as having received God's gift enabling me to talk with Him in tongues.

Its real simple my friend . As i am sure you will agree . IF folks have to coach me , teach me , instruct me on what or how to speak in tongues
it came from men and not GOD .
When i spoke with tongues , All i was doing was seeking GOD in prayer , AND IT JUST HAPPENED .
Either GOD gives it or HE dont . Not all speak with tongues , not all are prophets , not all are apostles
I have seen these men teaching folks how , HOW to speak with tongues . THEY actually tell them
to just start purposefully speaking whatever . That is rubbish . GOD either gives HE or HE DONT give it .
I watched some of them trying to coach folks to start saying chants and stuff . Rubbish .
EITHER GOD gives it or HE DONT . Tongues is real . I spoke it once . Long ago .
I beleive it was the baptism of the HOLY GHOST that came upon me . I never have spoke with it since . But
its not something i can teach to anyone . SEEK YE THE LORD is all i can say .

Get into your prayer closet, sister, just you and God. When I do that while I often begin in English as really get into it and into Him, what comes out of my mouth changes. Many years ago it was a babble, the babble of the baby in the Lord that I was. Today it is no longer babble, but a language where I can pray for things which at one time my conscious mind could not.

Give God the glory!

That is right my friend . we just press into the LORD in prayer .
Seek ye the best gifts , but i show unto you a more excellent way . Charity and SEEK that ye may EDIFY the CHURCH . PROPHESY for the edification of the church . LEAP up my friend . Leap up , at least in heart , and let the LORD be praised .

The following is a quote in 1947 by a man of God who used to teach my old pastor:

"It is wonderful to have a gift that will do the praying for you. It is wonderful to have a gift that will do the teaching for you... to have a gift that will do the testifying for you. Isn't it wonderful to have something like that? The more we yield to that, the more we depend on that, the better results we will get from God. If I am contentious, stubborn, going to have my will, I will ruin that gift..."

If I'm hearing rightly from the Lord, I do not have the gift of tongues because I am lazy, and if He gave me tongues, maybe he'd never hear my regular tongue again!

But yes, it's absolutely wonderful! His gifts, that are without grief!

All of us who do not "rejoice in the Lord always" and do not "pray without ceasing" are lazy in a measure. Likely some people are lazier than others. The key of course as in all good things is to ask God to help us get past our laziness. What was Jesus' work?

"I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work." John 9:4

Are we still in the day? Do we not have Light to work by? Are we too often putting our Light under a bushel?

"Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Matt 5:14-16

And on another thread here recently they spoke of the "greater things" did they not?

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." John 14:12

GOD Knows how to perfect the faith of the lambs . And all who live godly in CHRIST will suffer persecution .

Ever wonder why the apostles rejoiced so much after being beaten . OH it says why ,
REJOICING that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for HIS NAME . YEAH . The cost is the cost .
But its all to the gain of a lamb . NOW HANDS UP AND LET THE LORD BE PRAISED .
The GOOD LORD giveth and the GOOD LORD taketh away , BUT BLESSED BE THE NAME OF THE LORD .

Even so my friend. Back in 1976 my wife and I as very nominal and minimal Catholics attended some Pentecostal revival meetings together. She began speaking in an unknown tongue the 3rd night. For me it was 6 weeks later. The difference was that I was not ready to give up what was necessary to give up in my repentance.

That was again as you say only the beginning for both of us. We had a lot of growing to do. We had many more experiences to go through...

I needed this, @amadeus , thank you. I have struggled with tongues.

Tongues are not something I use regularly. I only use them when I don't know what to pray for, because of Romans 8:26. I know it's also for edification, but I just haven't quite figured it out.

Sometimes when a problem comes, I don't know how some things should be fixed but the Holy Spirit does.

But I think it provided a golden opportunity for me to fake it if I were like that.

As the saying goes "Fake it till you make it". There is no doubt that there is a lot of Charismatic confusion. Take the case of Charismatic Catholics. They continue to hold to their false doctrines, but claim that the Holy Spirit is enabling them to speak in tongues. However the Holy Spirit does not abide false teachings (see Revelation 1-3). I am quoting from another website:

"I personally knew a woman, years ago, who came out of a Charismatic Catholic church. She said they were actually prophesying "Thus saith Mary" in there! That is not the only time I have heard such a statement about Charismatic Catholics. Such a practice might sound shocking but is nonetheless typical for the Catholic mentality with its fabricated Mary whom they have deified, although they deny deifying her. They also readily claim to "venerate" Mary, but deny worshiping her, yet "venerate" is a synonym for worship...

...Too many ill-informed people think the Holy Spirit is moving among Charismatic Catholics. How can one know for sure and detect the true activity of the Holy Spirit? The real Holy Spirit will always act in accordance with and promote the message of the Bible, which he provided for us to read, believe and act upon today. Remember, it was holy men of God who were inspired by the Spirit of God who wrote the Bible. The message of the Bible is horribly violated by the foundational teachings of Catholicism itself, the teachings of which are also embraced by these Charismatic Catholics.

In 1976, at 15, I was living with my dad for 1.5 years. He took me to Calvary Chapel to hear Chuck Smith, but I wouldn't be a Christian for another 5 years. But I remember liking the clean feeling there.

Paul encourages us in the use of our gifts. The act of letting the Holy Spirit work in and through us itself changes us to become more like Him.

When we move in our gifts, this is being as Jesus is, and as our new man is. So we're really just being who we really are, the holy servants of God, and actually living that we, OH I'm having a hard time saying what I'm trying to say . . .

2 Corinthians 3:17-18 KJV
17) Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
18) But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

beholding as in a glass . . . that is, in a mirror . . . what do we see in a mirror? The glory of the Lord seen in us changes us into that glory. By the Spirit of the Lord, in Whom is Liberty! Freedom!
