You know what the only awkward part of Thanksgiving is for me? Who's gonna say the Thanksgiving prayer.

None of my family are really saved, and last time they chose me (again). Usually I tone things down, you know, so as not to make anybody feel uncomfortable, but last time I really laid one out there. Total Holy Ghost prayer on steroids.

Probably the last time they'll be asking me to do the Thanksgiving prayer, Lol.

So back in 1621, the Pilgrims were being oppressed by a king in England that wanted them to worship God in the way he wanted them to, so the pilgrims/puritans chose to leave. This is where my username came from, because it inspires me. <3 The pilgrims went on this ship called the Mayflower to get to the "New World" otherwise known today as America. It was a perilous journey and a lot of lives were lost, but the puritans believed that worshipping God freely was worth the journey. When they got to Plymouth, they had very little and they knew the Natives were there around, but didn't know they were friend or foe. The first winter was very hard for them and more lives were lost. The beautiful thing was their faith in all of this. I can't imagine how this brought them closer to God.

So then in Spring, this Native came into the village who was taught English from travelers (the Spanish had come first). I believe one of the names was Squanto, but there was another. They taught them how to grow their own food and fish. It became a time of plenty.

So then the pilgrims and Natives got together and had what we know as the first Thanksgiving. It was a time to thank God for everything He brought them through and they made a treaty of peace that lasted for around 300 years!!!!

So every year this time became a tradition and Thanksgiving eventually became a national holiday to spend with family and friends and thank God for everything that He has given us and done for us. :)

That’s basically what I said.

I never knew
The event that Americans commonly call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in October 1621. This feast lasted three days and was attended by 90 Wampanoag Native American people and 53 Pilgrims (survivors of the Mayflower).
It didn't become a national holiday until
President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863.

More like the Puritans who arrived in New England and weren't use to the harsh winters here in America, many perished as they weren't use to the extreme cold temperatures and Blizzards, and weren't prepared for those conditions, they didn't have enough food or clothing for that kind of extreme weather conditions, the Indians were kind enough to help them through until they were able to plant their own crops and the Indians showed them how to plant foreign foods such as corn and pumpkin and tomatoes, that weren't available back in Europe.

So after their first successful crops, they had a feast a celebration and gave thanks to God, and invited the Indians that helped them get through that first Winter, to partake in their feast and it continued from that time on, and later on President Lincoln made it a National Holiday.

Yes John Paul, thank you. :) I got excited. Mayflower and Thanksgiving is sort of my thing. :)

Keep on pointing the peoples to Christ . For in the end only the lambs shall be forever with the King .
You just point to the glorious LORD . Yes indeed . If we really sat down and pondered on the truth
we would realize if we truly love them we would point them to Christ . In the end
the only life that matters was eternal life . And that is in and found only IN JESUS CHRIST .
Two things are very real . May we ponder on them both this thanksgiving day
ETERNAL LIFE in JESUS is real and so is eternal damnation . WHERE DO WE WANT folks to end up .
SO yes indeed my friend . YOU point them to JESUS .
Imagine a house on fire , would we not do all to pull folks out of said house and warn them not to go in said house .
How much more then ought we to tell folks truth . For in the end there are but two places . WITH JESUS , or eternal damnation .

In Canada we do thanksgiving, I don't think it is as big as the U.S. tho. We do get one day off from work; and we did get together with family before covid put an end to that. So now just with my wife, and children, and my sons fiance; we get together eat turkey, and the works: pototos, stuffing, corn. Then as the head of the home, I speak a blessing over everyone, and then play a game, or watch a movie together.

Coming from the opposite side of the world who does not celebrate thanksgiving....How do you celebrate this holiday tradtion in your part of the world???
Hi Angelina, We have been celebrating Thanksgiving ever since we were born in New Orleans, La. traditionally speaking with our families. But the Fall Harvest is usually in September-October.

I must add, The origin: The Autumn has always been a cause for celebration. The ancient Greeks honored Demeter, their corn goddess, at the annual festival known as the Thesmophoria in October when the seeds for the next year's crop were about to be planted....

Even in America, there were at least two Thanksgiving celebrations before the one that took place at Plymouth in 1621. In 1607 a group of English settlers led by Captain George Popham met with a group of Abnaki Indians near the mouth of the Kennebec River to share a harvest feast and prayer meeting.

On December 14, 1619, there was a celebration in Virginia led by Captain John Woodleaf and 39 colonists who had traveled up the James River from Jamestown to a place called Berkeley Hundred, where they went ashore and gave thanks.

LOL, Walter and Debbie
