The verses do contradict each other,

They do seem to, but when they are put together they don’t.
For instance, the easiest verse to see the apparent contradiction in is:
Don’t answer a fool according to his folly or you will become just like him.
Answer a fool according to his folly or he will become wise in his own eyes.

But the entire Bible is like that. Hence the arguments.

Jde 1:5 - I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not.

Destroyed them that believed not. But only until He raises them for judgement after which they will not be destroyed/die again but will be given eternal life so they can be tormented for eternity.

Lol, you're on a roll :D
Would be comforting to know that unbelievers will not be tormented for eternity, it's just all those other pesky verses that have me so confused like all the ones Jesus talked about, concerning the fate of the goats and such. And the Epistles. Tough to reconcile them all and come to any final conclusion. Sure would love to be persuaded!

Well, in your searching, don’t forget there are two judgements and two resurrections. One is before the thousand years and another is after the thousand years. It helps to remember that as you read.

And sometimes.. No, oftentimes, we come to the scriptures with a certain mindset in place. Until certain nuances are actually pointed out to us, we simply don't see. Unless of course we don't want to. Then anything goes.

I would add to @Backlit's comment that even if human souls were naturally immortal (which Backlit has demonstrated that scripturally they do not), a God who can whip up a universe from scratch ex nihilo can also return a soul back to the nothingness. (Matthew 10:28)

Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

That sounds great! Every man does what is right in his own eyes. What could possibly go wrong?

Oh I know I say this too much but there’s literally no place I would rather be than talking with you guys!
In a present northern clime with snow and ice and hail and storms etc etc etc, that isn't much of a recommendation for us. I mean, where would you go? Build a snow man to punch?
Meanwhile, please no bashing in my absence. It's 34°C and I'm sitting in an air conditioned car waiting for my wife... Heading for the beach. See ya.

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

It says the fire will be eternal. Why do you think men are born eternal? Has it come from specific verses you’ve read or did you take another mans word for it?

No snow yet here in Maryland. In the 60’s today and tomorrow. :)

Yes, the fire is eternal and the worm never dies. Don't recall saying men are born eternal...? I used to argue that the FIRE and THE WORM would be forever but could go no further as I got stopped up at every turn, so I just let this go for the time being. Now, my interest is re-piqued. No, no preacher, teacher, book that I can recall brought it to me...it could have even been someone on here at one point where I hear things and, I DO know enough to be a "Berean" :)

Nite nite!

Pluralism is the very order of the day, inside and outside the church. The only thing that distinguishes the Christian from the worldling is a few odd habits and a profession of faith. It might be considered bashing to many, but if no one said it the rocks would cry out.

I believe what I once heard a great man of God say:

Standards in the macro; compassion in micro. When dealing with many, let the truth be proclaimed. When dealing with the lone, trembling soul, treat them with the understanding that mimics Christ in His dealings with the oppressed. :)

You're trying to reconcile a western way of understanding and Jewish idiom.....thats where the problem lies.
If you get to the core of the Jewish idiom the mystery evaporates but if you insist on a western way of seeing you will have God behaving in unbelievably cruel ways reflecting the nature of the devil.

Lol.
You thought I did okay with Eternal Torment. And it was by looking at ALL the verses and not discarding any that, with the Spirits help, I was able to see it was false.

Just start writing the verses as you hear men quote them or you read them. Start a notebook or a recipe card for each one. Collect them all and lay them all out and ask God to help you understand.
This is great stuff, SBG! :D

I just assumed, since you said it would be comforting to know unbelievers won’t be tormented for eternity but you can’t make that determination…to be tormented forever a man would have to have eternal life in him other than through the Holy Spirit in the new birth.
