An EMT friend of my wife's recommends against tongue piercings. They can be problematic if first responders have to insert an airway.
@Lambano I know what the EMT friend means, although today it seems like having them put in is becoming almost 'standard fare' for a lot of young ppl when they reach their majority. (Even the lady serving at the local Christian bookstore had one.)

Someone at the drug store asked my wife about her tattoos last Friday. It was a good opportunity to witness.
@Lambano It's undeniable that having it done offers a lot of opportunities to testify, when the person is motivated to use them as such; seems like having it done is something that is relished for exactly that reason. Sounds like your wife had another good opportunity last week; and I reckon she has few if any regrets about having gotten inked up after her life-threatening experience was past.

I'm against tattoos.
Well, fine!

My wife and I talked to a young lady - who seemed quite shy and modest - who had the whole of John 3.16 tattooed on her wrist area; it was her favorite text and mine also; and I'm sure other conversations have arisen as a result of her willingness to have it done.

But you are right; tattoos are not for everyone.

if they fee l a burden form god to do it-- go for it to the glory of God.
@Ronald Nolette I guess it's really a Romans 14 sort of matter: some young men and women might feel strongly not to want to get a Bible verse tattooed and others may strongly be motivated to use a Bible verse tattoo as a witness tool and go confidently to the parlor accordingly.

(If this makes sense...)

Absolutely- this is where believers have individual liberty as long as it is motivated by the Holy Spirit and not self.

@Ronald Nolette One can well imagine that there are young believers who may even be shy and modest who have gotten something done wholesomely as a witness opportunity:

(It doesn't stop the legalists from trying to give them a hard time, mind you.)

Maybe she was not that shy and modest?

I mean, it sounds really really strange to me that a modest woman (or man) would get a tattoo, even if it was religious. That's what jerks do. Didn't you know that there are drug lords and murderers with tattoos of Jesus and crosses all over their bodies? And would you consider them to be examples of faithful Christians just for tattooing Jesus on themselves?

Not to say tattoos are ugly as the devil, and one of my biggest turn offs in people.

Well...I don't regard it as logical that because someone somewhere has a religious tattoo and engages in crime, therefore this proves that everyone everywhere with a Bible verse tattooed is a criminal. People receive ink ... or don't receive ink, as the case may be ... according to a huge variety of motivations.

Question is, what do you believe to be the point in profaning the property of God with a permanent fiendish black patch which penetrates your blood and cells, forever? I honestly don't see it as anything different from picking a knife and cutting the word "Jesus" in your skin. Both are devilish and masochistic practices that a genuine believer wouldn't do.

Not to offend you anyway, I simply would like to know your approach on the topic.

@ShyIntrovert

I guess attitudes may differ from one part of the world to another; this is from the Bible Belt in the US:

Around here (Bible Belt), it is common, especially among evangelical Christians, for the girls under about 40 to have religious tattoos. More do than don't, especially when you get to the under 30 crowd. I hardly know any female at church that is under 30 that does not have a tattoo.

Then your Bible Belt is lost. Forever.

Legalism may seem like an attractive, instant solution; but the fact is on many matters in the Christian life people are likely to have various ideas; and the Romans 14 passage on Christian liberty implies that this indeed will be the case.

@ShyIntrovert

It's indeed not for everyone.

But I wouldn't say that because these young ladies have gotten some Bible verse ink it therefore supposedly proves that they are not genuine believers.

John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me

This is something I will probably get tattooed. This verse is the reason I am a Christian. This happened to me and my testimony relates to this verse. I met Jesus in this fashion.
@Mantis Some Christians do indeed feel an urge to get tattooed for testimony reasons.

From back
Actually just tonight farouk, mine provided a good witness.. So quite a few in my church have faith based tattoos and my friend and I were talking about them..I've seen tattoos that have a lot of meaning like mine. I feel mine is special and thankful I got it. I haven't once felt guilty for getting it.
(This was from Mayflower.)

Some Christians do feel that it's a joyful experience to go the tattoo parlor and have the testimony ink machined in.
