They even have tornado warnings up here....
Yeah, the trouble with trying to avoid settling where tornadoes roam is that the cursed things are showing up frequently, these days, in places they used to never appear. I think the LORD lets the devil mess with the weather an awful lot.

When I was a kid, our only family vacations were visiting relatives in Kansas. Hours of wheat fields, corn fields, more wheat fields, cows, barns, grain silos, the occasional oil derrick, more wheat fields…
When I was a wee Navy brat, my daddy used to keep the roads hot. We lived on a little western Pacific island called Guam for over 6 years. The island is 8 miles wide at the northern and southern tips, 4 miles wide in the middle, and 21 miles long (and shaped sort of like a bent hourglass). And he did not let that stop him from driving all day on Sundays. We spent a lot of time driving through the deserts of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, too. I can remember looking out the front windshield of our car and seeing 50 miles of highway streching ahead as straight as an arrow with nothing else but sand, cactus, and the occasional tumbleweed rolling across the road. And, oh, that cactus candy...

Sorry, I went on vacation there for a moment. :p

Back in the ‘80s, I had to man a booth at a Computer show in Vegas. I had an extra day, and I always wanted to see the Grand Canyon, so I rented a car and made a reservation at a hotel on the South Rim. The stretch of US 93 between the Hoover Dam and Kingman, Arizona is one of the most desolate pieces of land I’ve ever seen.

4 hours to get there, check into the motel, get up in the morning, and only a couple of hours wandering around the South Rim before I had to drive back to Vegas. Reminded me of a scene from the Griswold’s Family Vacation.

Been to all them places, too. My daddy dragged us everywhere. :D

Your post brought back memories for me. Idk if anyone else ever did this. But when I was a kid and we were on long drives (at night), I used to watch the reflection of the road (ahead of us) on the back window and imagine we were driving the opposite direction. (I'm not sure if I wrote that so that it made sense.)

Oh, yeah. For sure. We had activity books, too, that were intended just for car travel. I remember one night we hit a huge jackrabbit in Texas. I was half asleep. I thought the car was coming apart.

‘Fraid Fajullah is not a place to bring the kids. My Grandkids stayed in the States while their daddy patched up Marines in Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

At least they got to see the area around Camp LeJeune.

My 2nd duty station was (West) Germany. I was told we were in a cold war. It seemed like there was terrorism everywhere. I just missed getting car-bombed in Frankfurt one time. You were supposed to check your cars all over and under for bombs before you set out for work. The gate guards at the base would always ask if you checked before they would let you on base. Lots of people lied and said yes, but the SPs always knew and they'd make you get out and do it which would make people behind them late for work, of which the Air Force took a very dim view, on the whole, at that time. I got in the habit of leaving a half hour early for work. No waiting. Good times. And the flightline Geedunk (not an AF term) had the best chili dogs. I like food a lot. Sometimes I have to go a couple of days without eating to get control of my appetite. I fear I've said too much. :D

Okay; Coronado (San Diego) and Bremerton (Seattle) were much more fun.
We were in San Diego for 4 years. My daddy was a Company Commander (that's the Navy's incredibly bizarre way of saying "Drill Instructor"
drillsergeant.gif
) at the Naval Training Center (which had a nice little 9-hole course--I played Torrey Pines, too, overlooking the then-nude Black's Beach), right next to the Marine Corps's left coast Boot Camp, where they ran a young fella to death while we were there. (I guess it just happened once in a while back then¿)

Chalk up another ramble for Ol' Barn.

What year(s) was this? Our Navy boy did his basic training at Coronado in ‘92. We flew out for his graduation and had to stay a few extra days when Hurricane Andrew wrecked Miami that year (to tie back to the “tornado” sub-thread). San Diego is a great place to ride out an Atlantic category 5 hurricane.

lololol

So is Pensacola, FL (I was born there--Fly Navy--Go, Blue Angels!) and Mobile, Alabama (I lived and worked there--my dream job--in the '90s). :D

We always ran from hurricanes, usually to Northern AL. I was in that area for 4 or 5 of them. My daddy's philosophy of hurricane survival was "GO!!" He figured if you had a family and enough money for a tankful of gas and a night in a motel, it was a no-brainer. I love my daddy! Can you tell? He taught me everything before I learned it at school! I was telling my shrink that just today. Now I know I've said too much! lol

6.6 earthquake on Guam. That was actually kinda fun. No one got hurt, as far as I know, and watching the cars sway back and forth in the Navy Commissary parking lot might be the coolest looking thing I've ever seen. It was like a sheet metal and chrome ocean. I could tell I wasn't going to be able to keep standing, so I just sat down on the pavement and watched the show. I'm not sure I knew exactly what was happening until it was over. My mama was pretty shook up. She was sitting in our '62 Bel Air all alone.

What year(s) was this?
Mid '70s, I think. Great place to visit, but I wouldn't want to raise any kids there. I got around Southern California, and did some serious backsliding. Of course, my daddy's job kept him away for days, sometimes. He often had to sleep over with his "rickets," as he called them. There were good times, tho. One time we took what was supposed to be a moderate Sunday drive and ended up in Yuma, AZ. It was so arrid that my acne cleared up overnight. There was a street fair right outside our motel room with a bandstand. It was awesome!
