I use ESV first, then NASB. If there are questions or I need clarification, I go to the KJV.

I avoid the NIV altogether.

I have always preferred the NIV. I use others, but always end up reading the NIV for devotions and prayer.

I used the ESV, HCSB, NIV, NLT, and NKJV primarily but I do often refer to the KJV as well.

I moved away from the KJV because of the blank stares and time spent trying to explain the KJV language to someone who is not an English major. I also began to examine more deeply a lot of the criticisms of the newer versions and they don't hold up so much, because the assertions are often made in a vacuum. I still respect and certainly don't blame people for using it. In fact, it remains the most memorable version to quote and I frequently find myself quoting certain verses from it.

I like the NIV because I think it's the most readable yet it still maintains true language. I chose the NLT for my youth because it broke it down a little further for the middle schoolers and younger high schoolers. You can detect more paraphrasing and sometimes the NLT oversimplifies concepts, but I think that's why you cannot exclusively rely on any particular translation.

The ESV is probably the most akin to the old KJV and it maintains the tradition of the NASB-type translation which seeks the most formal equivalence. The HCSB is the next closest in that grouping, but it's more like an "NIV ESV IMHO. I really like the notes in the NKJV study Bible and the translation is not bad.

I guess my primary translations are the ESV and NIV. I've adopted the latter because our church uses it. I do use the 2011 version, I get a little miffed about the whole gender-inclusive thing, but I can work around it. I'm not going to fuss over humanity instead of mankind. I do think the language gets a little bit impersonal at times, though.

When I got saved I started with the KJV. I struggled with it. Anyone who is serious with God will do many comparisons of our English Bibles readily available on the internet or software. I usually start with the NKJV or ESV, and then use others for comparisons. I don't regret moving away from the KJV. Some say the KJV is the original language :)

How is that possible?

I and my family use the ESV for daily reading; the KJV (with margin ref) for study along with strongs and other lexicons; I do like the NET and try to stay away from the NIV (non inspired version) ;) where possible.

You left out the Holy Spirirt.

Me I prefer, Jesus, the Holy Spirit and God above all things. But if i need too, i read the KJV. The only uncorrupted truth I know is Christ.

No, I don’t recall leaving out the Holy Spirit Rom 15:4; 2 Tim 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20; Ps 119:130; 2 Tim 2:15 and what are the Holy Scriptures able to do? 2 Tim 3:15

Sorry mjhealth, I don’t hear voices, haven’t been given visions in the night, however I am left with this challenge Ps 119:11. I am thankful for the Spirit Mind of God which strengthens me daily.

It’s a simple message with powerful consequences.

In the Masters service.

i read the amplified. it translates from the greek into english and brings out all the meanings of the greek works and not just one word to help understand what is being said.

I have the KJV in my memory from my past readings and study of it. And when Spirit brings something to my remembrance it is in KJV English. :)

I like the ESV now though, although I don't mind the KJV, NKJV or the Amplified.
