I have to agree with Prentis on this one Insight.

Words only direct us toward the thing that is the real hope. Words unless acted upon (which in this case means leading us as to how to enter and dwell in Christ) have no value.

We surely cannot say that about Christ. He is the value. He is the focus of the word and the life of the word.

And that life does come from that in Christ "we might have fellowship with God the Father."

John 5:26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
John 6:53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

The Spirit gives life and that same Spirit lives in believers.

God is not contained in a book, He does not live there, He lives in us, it is the Spirit that teaches us while we read the Bible, not the other way around.

Does the Spirit teach us while we read other books? YES

Amen brothers!

We are to be led of... The bible? Of course not. The Spirit. The Bible is true, and confirms the word of the Lord.

But we are to follow God himself, and as Jesus, do only what we see the Father doing.

Again Prentis you miss the point of 2 Tim 3:15 and 2 Peter 1:21

It was the Spirit which gave you the Written Word that is may be written upon your heart and that you may be guided by it?

You are not being honest about the source of the Word?

Christ became the living Word through his obedience to it.

The only thing about the words is, I've been at a point where I was saying them and thinking them without really understanding them. After a few tries it makes a lot of sense and you can feel the goodness, and the health in what Jesus was saying.

It does not say Christ became the living word out of obedience to it, it says he IS the word, and he became flesh.

Once again, you misinterpret all of these passages in a way that goes against the rest of scriptures. Yes, the word is useful, but that is, in the hands of the Spirit and the man led by the Spirit.

Is a man automatically spiritual because he reads the Bible? Obviously not. So who quickens? The Spirit.

The word confirms the work of the Lord.

Your understanding is carnal, and reveals a lack of understanding of the work of the Spirit. The carnal man cannot understand the things of the Spirit,... they are spiritually discerned. The word is indeed of the spirit, but it must be discerned by the spirit.

Yes. :)

[sup]1[/sup] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.... (Notice the scriptures were not there in the beginning, before creation)... [sup]14[/sup] And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
You say that Jesus, a man of flesh, BECAME the word of God, when it is the exact opposite. Jesus, the word of God already, became flesh.

The irony of our discussion is this:

I am defending the very Keys given to the Apostles by God through Jesus Christ that unlock salvation.

Those Keys are recorded in the Holy Scripture (Read the first key (1 Peter) and the second Key (2 Peter)

"And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 16:19. The Apostles by the same Spirit which gave us the Word of Truth also gave them the ability to understand and proclaim the Gospel of the coming Kingdom. That same Gospel is written for you personally learning to give you understand and teach salvation.

For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Rom 15:4 2 Tim 3:15

But you would endeavour to remove their importance of gaining such hope through the written word?

It’s that same recorded Gospel which you believe can save and yet you will not refrain from saying it’s merely ink on a page.

By what foundation is the Body of Christ built upon? If he is the Head corner stone? "built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone" (Eph. 2:20).

The Word is the foundation of all life!..even the chief cornerstone

If the Word testifies of Christ and Christ testifies to the Word, are they not one in the same?

I have never stated we should worship a book!
I have never stated we should merely gain knowledge
I have never stated we reduce its importance in a believer’s life!

The Word doesn’t need my defence, its stands apart from all of us.

But I have tried to uphold its importance that we might have hope.

". . . His (Yahweh's) divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the "knowledge of him (Christ) who hath called us to glory and virtue" (2 Peter 1:3).

The knowledge of the Gospel is the key to life eternal.

Where is that knowledge found?

Answer: The Bible.

Peter declared that it is through this means that we can attain unto "divine nature" (see 2 Peter 1:4), and an inheritance in the Glory of the Age to Come. The key to the understanding of the Scriptures is the key to happiness and contentment in this life, as well as to glory and immortality in the future.

The Bible is a storehouse of divine truth and with it comes certain blessings for those who read and study its content.

For why does one study the Holy Scriptures?

To discover exactly what God requires of them, it offers present and future blessings beyond the ability of man to assess (Rev 1:3)

For how could our natural eyes behold that which is spiritual?

"eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him" (1 Cor. 2:9).

And still not comprehend its depth?

No one can come to knowledge of Jesus Christ who is the centre of this creation without the Holy Scriptures.

They requires us to study, that faith might be established and increased.

"The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness unto him; neither can he know them because they are spiritually discerned" (1 Cor. 2:14).

Like David and Jesus himself one can developed a deep love for the Book, but more importantly for its Author whose love will be revealed therein, and by this influence the Reader will be led to radiate that same love to others.

Therefore, this divine Book is the greatest power for good in the hands of man — if it be read with understanding.

Who here would reduce its importance and why?

Is a correct understanding of God's revelation essential to salvation?

Does it really matter what we believe, so long as our motives are sincere? The answer to these questions are answered by the Lord Jesus himself.

He declared:

"True worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father seeketh such to worship Him... they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth" (John 4:23-24).

What role does the Bible play in this worship?

What role does the Bible play in this truth?

And where is the sole source of this Spirit and Truth?

I don't think anyone has reduced it's importance, it just seems that you have elevated it to the point of following a book, instead of following the Spirit. The Bible is a guide, which points us to Christ, we receive much wisdom from the Bible, it is good for rebuking and training in righteousness and it is God inspired.

We can read about other people's experiences in the Bible, but God wants us to have our own experiences with Him, in that way, we can learn directly from Him through our trials and struggles. This is how we learn and mature in Him, through our experiencing Him.

When we experience Him in our lives, we don't have to run back to the Bible everytime He does something and look up a scripture to make sure it's from Him, from experiencing Him ourselves, we know it is from Him, and the Spirit teaches us this way.

God does not live in a book, He lives in us, it is Jesus in us, that transforms us. Jesus is the One with the power and the overcomer.

I am elevating it because no one else is!

How does God change the characters of individuals?

What has He provided to do this work?

Is that book sufficiently profound as to cause its readers to "think" in order to understand its message?

As thoughts are ideas, actions, habit, character, so this habit of thinking on God's word can change men, fulfilling the prayer of Christ:

"Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth" [John 17:17).

Jake, would you diminish the very Words of Jesus Christ here?

Spirit = Word = Truth = The Holy Scriptures = Jesus Christ

Which would you NOT elevate?

I will wait for one to elevate the importance of His Words until then I continue my cause.

And what of James?

He taught by perseverance and prayer (James 1:5), we will attain understanding that can change our lives and win for us immortality in the Kingdom that God will ultimately set up on earth (Daniel 2:44; 7:27).

Is God’s Blessings in this book?

Does it contain a life giving message or should we seek it elsewhere?

Clearly this discussion has revealed a lack of deep respect for the Word of God – hopefully we can restore the balance.

The Bible is not merely a book, or ink on a page, it is the Book of Life.

It reveals the true nature of man, it shows us that we possess the grim disease of mortality, and reveals what he must do to overcome it and attain unto eternal life.

It points the way towards more abundant living now and immortality in the age to come, for godliness has "promise of the life that now is, and that which is to come" (1 Tim. 4:8).

The Bible teaches us of the "a light shining in a dark place"', and, with humility, teachable, and independence of mind, let us diligently enquire into the things which it reveals for the obedience and confirmation of faith.

Who desires to become "a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth"; and be able intelligently to "contend for the faith"

I never thought I would be contending for the sacredness of the Word in such a place as this. <_<

Is the Bible able to bring us to understand the complete divine will of God? Are we able to know God and Jesus Christ through its revelation?

How do we speak dear readers? 1 cor 2:13

How do we compare Spirtual with Spiritual with the Spiritual Word of God?

We would be left in our carnal state without Chirst and hope in this world.

"I will never forget Thy precepts; for with them Thou hast quickened me" (or given me new life — Psalm 119:93).
.
Are you truly seroius about its content? Can it inspire us? purify our characters? give us peace of mind? and provide us with a glorious hope for the future?
.
Or do you not know the Holy Scriptures (spirit) can transform us, it has the stamp of its divinity.

As you know, the gospel is about us being reconcilled back to God, through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who now empowers us, by His indwelling to be overcomers, like He is. Our lives are hidden in Christ, we are dead, it is His life we are living now. This is how God changes our character, He conforms us to the full stature of Christ, because Christ lives in us. This is what He has provided for us, we also have the Bible as a tool, to point us to Christ and to teach us that we need to now "follow the Spirit".

Our characters are transformed by the renewing of our minds, by going through trials and struggles, as God takes us on our own experiences, we learn to walk in the Spirit, doing what Jesus is doing and going where He is going.

The written word is not Jesus Christ, Jesus is the Word that was made flesh, all was created through Him and for Him, He is our Savior, He is God. He is the One who saves, the written word does not save us, it did not die for me on the cross, nor was it resurrected.

The Bible is not Truth, but it's contents are true.

Here is where you are wrong.

Jesus is not God.

Who did Paul look to first for salvation? Rom 7:25

It appears the doctrine of the trinity has caused you not to distinguish between the origin the Word (God, who is Father) and its recipients (The Son and us)

Because of this, the value of the Word is lost because you cannot see it as David, Jesus and the Prophets understood it.

I can see now why you are in a bind over its importance.

If you are unable to know its source how can you appreciate its power?

You cannot appreciate the Spirit which moved these men of old (including Jesus Christ) they all were moved and it enabled them to make known to men the mind of God through history, precept and prophecy, so that the Bible though composed of many books and parts, is the one Word of God.

"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness" (2 Tim. 3:16).

"God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son" (Heb. 1:1).
"Which things we speak, not in words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Spirit teacheth" (1 Cor. 2:13).

"For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man; but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Spirit" (2 Pet. 1:21).

Thy word is truth" {John 17:17).

"Thou testifiedst against them by Thy spirit in the prophets" (Neh. 9:30).
"The things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord (1 Corinthians 14:37).

The Bible is not Truth, but it's contents are true.
"Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life; and they are they which testify of me" (Christ — John 5:39).

This verse is often misrepresented - it simply mean "read the Bible"!

This was a rebuke to the Pharisees which strangley I find myself here doing likewise! Jesus was saying

'You search the Scriptures, because you THINK you will find eternal life there.

But you refuse to see that those same Scriptures testify of me!

And you do not come to me, that you might truly have life.'

"In other words, the Pharisees were avid Bible students, but with their self-righteous attitudes and Bible trivia mentality, they had overlooked the most important point of all -- their need for redemption through the coming Messiah.

It was becuase of thier hardened hearts they too miossed the mark regarding the true worth of the Bible! If they searched it with open hearts pliable and willing to conform they too would have been lead to salvation (in Christ) But in the Eternal Word they found no salvation!

Because they took the Bible for granted.

the Word could have enabled them to become intimate, and experience Christ which brings about deep and lasting changes in their lives, that same word could have given them eternal life, that "can" possess only in and through Christ.

Bible = Book = Scriptures = Christ which leads to salvation.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Power of the Bible.

God personally speaking (not Jesus Christ) "My word shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it" (Isa. 55:11).

"Sanctify them through Thy (Gods) truth; Thy (Gods) word is truth (John 17:17).

Jesus asking of His father what He had done for him.

"Wherewithal shall a man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to Thy (Gods) word" (Psalm 119:9).

"God hath chosen you (Jake & Prentis) to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit (Word), and belief of the truth (Word)" (2 Thessalonians 2:13).

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

You would not know this passage if it was not for the Word of His (Gods)Testomony
"He so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him (the word made flesh) should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).

Another issue facing you is the workings of this Word in us.

God (The Father and source of all Truth ) desires to draw all men by His love which is manifested in all that He has done for the world (John 3:16).

Through His word manifested in various ways and means He has sought to enlighten it, and to exalt it to a participation in the divine nature by the perfecting influences of the Truth.

Paul styled this "the Word of Reconciliation" (2 Cor 5:18,19,20)

It is this Word of Reconciliation that achieved the reconciliation between God and Man.

We know the Heavenly Father and His Son together went to the cross! (Notice how Paul in Rom 8:31,32 quotes Gen 22:12; and how, incidentally, Abraham being a man actually typifies the Almighty!)

Through the Power and inner working of the Almightys Word the Son was saved from death and elevated to the “right” hand side of his Father.

Everything in this creation both natural and spiritual is from God. Heworking through His special Son wrought salvation by the Word of His Power HJe did this!

God and Christ did so together, in order to declare God's (Yahwehs) righteousness:

My Father is right! His way of the cross is right also!

Not my will (words) but thy will (WORD) be done!

Amen

We do disagree that Jesus is God, He is and the scriptures do confirm this, yet that is another topic all together.

I would agree that the Pharisees searched the scriptures, searching and searching for something that was just not there, in fact Jesus was standing in front of them, and because they were following a book, they didn't realize it was He who they were to follow. Even though the scriptures testified of Him.

I would say that is a problem with some today, with all due respect for these people, who do search the scripture for eternal life, the Lord wants to give us our own experiences with Him, and it is possible for us to miss out on these experiences because "it's not in the Bible", so it must not be from God. Not all of our exact situations can be found in the Bible, that is why we follow the Spirit and I don't think you would disagree the importance of following the Spirit, we can not be reading the Bible all of our days, all day long. It testifies of the Spirit and it tells us to follow the Spirit.

Seeing what Paul went through, helps me see that he was content and rejoiced in all things, but now I must go and be content and rejoice in all the trials God has given to me, Paul can no longer help me, it is Christ who gives me strength.

The Holy Spirit leads us into all truth, I could learn from talking to someone, from another book, from hearing someone say something or from a trial God takes me through, all what I will learn and have learned, isn't necessarily going to be from the Bible.

I just read your 2nd post after mine, the Word in us, is Christ, not a book, it's the Word, made flesh!

I agree, in part.

The Word which testifies of Christ (i.e The Scriptures) if they dwell in you richly, then of course you have Christ dwelling in you! That is what Christ was teaching the Pharisees.

Col 3:16 sums it all up by combining the Word which he spoke (by His Father) throughout his ministry and now recorded in the Book (Bible). If this is understood correctly it leads you through life experience the richness in God through Jesus Christ, then you will find at that appointed time that he in fact dwelt in you richly!

“You are my friends if you do whatsoever I command (Word) you! “

If these commands (Word of Christ) are not in us - we have no Christ!

Indeed we must follow his commands, on that I agree wholeheartedly, Insight! :)

But the Word is Jesus Christ himself. The confusion arises with those words. But John 1 makes clear that the word is Christ, and that is NOT the scriptures, because they testify of him.

We are to follow Christ. He did not say 'Follow my sayings' but follow me. Yes, we do his commands, but we follow him. They are one and together. All these things point to Christ, who works in the Spirit, and that is where we must follow him.

Unless we walk by the Spirit, or seek to, our understanding of obeying God is still carnal.

Jesus came in the flesh, now He is God, He dwells in us, not the Bible.

The word command can not be interchanged with word, which means logos, command means to "charge".

The Bible and Jesus are not one in the same.
