"In Christ": What does it really mean?

The words “in Christ” and similar, i.e.; “in Jesus Christ”, “in Christ Jesus”, “in him’, are used ad nauseam within the Christian world with hardly anyone ever giving any thought whatsoever as to what the words really mean or entail, thus relegating them to nothing more than Christian “buzz words” that sound good and Christian-like.

So what do these words really mean? What does it mean to be “in Christ” and how does one get “in Christ” or into Christ? Is there a specific way stated in the bible? Are there unique benefits for being “in Christ” once one has achieved that state of being “in him”? Are there benefits available to those not being “in Christ”? Can you receive spiritual blessings without being “in Christ”?

These are logical questions that should be asked or considered when one sees or uses these or similar words inferring the same.

There are 146 references in the New Testament (may not be all inclusive, but close if not) using these exact or similar words as those mentioned above. If mentioned that frequently and to that extent, it must be of great importance, so likewise, all should render like importance to these words when using them, clearly understanding what they truly mean and entail.

Consider the suffix “ian” attached to the word “Christ” to become the word Christian; what does "ian" attached to the end a word mean or indicate? One of its meanings is 'from or belonging to'. As it pertains to Christ, it indicates that a Christian is from or belonging to, or in other words, owned by Christ! It should be noted too that the word “Christian” doesn’t mean a believer in or follower of Christ, but rather really means owned by Christ. So, you could be a believer in and follower of Jesus, practice some form of “Christian” religious worship, be devout, moral, etc. etc, but not be owned by Him, not “in him”.

Note that the bible says the following:

1 Cor 6:20 "For ye are bought with a price:"

Acts 20:28 “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood."

The above clearly states that Christ purchased or bought the church with His own blood, so it's clear that Christians, those owned by Christ, those that are part of his body (the church), have been bought and paid for by his blood which was the price he paid for them who are now “in him”. Therefore, those that are “in” the church are His, and are “in him”.

What are some of the benefits that being owned by or “in Christ” bestowed upon you that are unable to be conferred in any other way according to scripture?

• Be saved, receive redemption, have your sins remitted and added to the Lord’s body which is the church
• Be buried/planted with Him in the likeness of his death thus enabling like resurrection
• Put on Christ and become a Christian and child of God
• Receive the Holy Spirit, spiritual gifts, blessings, have hope, and be made alive in Him

So, how do you become owned by, “in Christ”, and part of the church? The fact of the matter is, there is one specific way mentioned in the bible as to what one must do to be “in Christ” as well as benefits for being “in him” that can only be realized thereby: by baptism.

Rom 6:3 “Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death”?

Gal 3:26/27 “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ”.

1st Cor 12:13 “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

Rom 6:4 “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life”.

Col 2:12 “Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead”.

Rom 6:5 “For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection”:

Acts 2:38 “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost”. 41 “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls”. 47 “Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”

• Christ’s body is the church of which He is the head (Col 1:18, Eph 5:23);
• You become part of the church by becoming a part of His body. You become part of His body by being baptized into it.
• In it (His body, the church), you obtain spiritual blessings (Eph 1:3).
• Are you really a Christian without being part of His body, the church, which you are added to upon being baptized (Acts 2:41, 47)?
• If you’re not buried with Him through baptism, can you then still be raised with Him?

lol ....however, with respect. 'Dim' for me means 'preaching at' as opposed to talking to or with a person. If some has something they find valuable to understand, share it without shoving it into someones face :)
'Dim' for me also means the need to be defensive or objectionable....the which I am guilty of also. May the Lord save me from myself!

Addressing the OP...

My observation is that Paul uses "In Christ" as an identity. Our new identity, superseding all previous identities as Jews or Gentiles, slave or free, male or female (Galatians 3:28) or any other identity marker . This is who we are now.

...

(A long time, on a long-since deceased forum, I introduced this topic in one of the very rare times that I ever started a thread myself. This topic has special meaning to me.)

Yes, even to the point of how we see ourselves which is mostly (at least in my case) as unworthy.
Our status is now Princes and Princesses of the Kingdom and we are bidden to see ourselves as such.

abiding in the vine! hmmmmmm. I s'pose we could tell that to Moslems or to Hindu's and they'd really get it!
Do you think so. I don't think that they would understand the reality at all in fact.
Abiding means you are one of his Church = his body ? and he is the Head their of. Not a Religion of Mans working, like Islam or Jews had, where they did not know God.

Now when one is truly Saved, like when the worthy Jews who were Jesus disciples came to understand who Christ Jesus truly was. you see that they did not get duped by the stupid Jews that were on a Mans works religious trip.

No one comes to the Father but through his only begotten Son.

Christ Jesus is the Well from us must do drink freely from.

The Vine represents Christ Jesus and all this gets it's nourishment from abiding in the Vine, or it withers on the vine and falls off.

oh well, do you think it might be a good idea to stop using in house religious terminology then?

Don't know what you mean exactly, but what I can tell you about the "Christian" audience in general is that there is a dearth of knowledge and understanding on this topic as well as many others.

"In Christ": What does it really mean?

OP ^

It MEANS...several things.

1) an individual HAS HEARTFULLY CONFESSED Belief “IN” the Lord God Almighty.

2) the Lord God Almighty HAS SEARCHED the HEART of that individual, THAT his “CONFESSION” is TRUE.

3) A FALSE “Confession”...?
That man IS (by the Lord God) “IGNORED”.

4) A TRUE “heartful Confession”...?
That man’s BODY IS ACCEPTED BY the Lord God,
OF that man’s TRUE BELIEF,
OF that man’s TRUE WILLINGNESS to “LAY DOWN his bodily LIFE unto ( a SPIRITUAL ) DEATH,
FOR that man’s TRUE BELIEF and LOVE OF the Lord God.”

5) A SPIRITUAL DEATH...IS Gods Offering AND Verification AND Giving OF JESUS’ uncorrupted RISEN BODY FOR A “converted” (ie SAVED soul (restored) and QUICKENED (born again spirit)...man to “DWELL IN”....
UNTIL that man’s OWN body HAS “physically, mortally DIED”...

6) Once a mans physical, mortal Body HAS Died...that BODY knows, sees, feels NOTHING, rots, decays and WAITS to be RISEN UP ... in its OWN “uncorrupted” BODY.

CHRIST “IN” a “converted man”.... means Gods Spirit (His Truth, His Power)...
DWELLS “IN” that mans....HEART’S THOUGHTS.

Expressing the HEART’S THOUGHTS...(as opposed to the MINDS THOUGHTS)....IS the “conundrum”.

* God GIVES a Converted mans “HEARTS THOUGHTS” His Spirit, (Power) His Word (Truth), to DWELL IN THAT MAN....and the man CAN...(freewill)...
1) acquiesce/yield TO his Hearts Thoughts...which ARE of God and GOOD.
OR
2) acquiesce/yield TO his Carnal Minds Thoughts...which MAY BE GOOD or BAD.

POINT BEING...
A converted man “IN” Christ Jesus and the Spirit of God “IN” a man...
The man HAS the POWER to MAKE his own Carnal Mind (acquiesce/yield) to his Hearts thoughts .... or not.

The more a man DOES acquiesce/yield his Carnal Minds Thought TO his Converted Heart’s Thoughts....THAT MAN IS...using Gods Power with-IN the man TO:
Have a MIND LIKE CHRIST.

That is called; a man “daily” working out his own salvation...

That mans SALVATION of his SOUL is already established...
However that mans ETERNAL “position” (of Ranks so to speak) is Being Established.
Meaning...the Earth shall be made anew...As it is in Heaven SO SHALL it be on Earth.

There ARE “hierarchy“ positions IN Heaven.
There SHALL be (established BY God) “hierarchy” positions ON a new earth.
DO much, Receive much.
DO little, Receive little.
The much and little are Positions of power and authority in Service unto the Lord God.

Glory to God,
Taken

I believe that Jesus contains within Himself the sum total of all past and future human experience. This is how Jesus is able to "pay for" our sins (IE. He literally suffered firsthand for each of our sins... whatsoever you do to the least of my brethren, that you have done unto me). We are "in Jesus" in a literal sense, and also strive to become like Jesus.

You have provided a lot of good information here, but it would not appear you have grasped the fulness of what it means to be "in Christ"--that is "in Christ" as Christ is "in God", making them One.

The subject is rather that of being One, as they are One.

That Oneness is not so much a form of communal unity or being of one mind or body, although those are all good descriptions somewhat. Likewise, so is the marriage between a man and a women and the two becoming one flesh, just as Paul revealed after thousands of years of it not fully being understood as rather pointing to our marriage with our Head the Bridegroom. Likewise, the full mystery of Oneness in God was yet to be revealed.

The problem is that union between a man and a woman, although it was stated correctly, has not been fully understood correctly, because a man and woman in marriage don't actually become "one flesh" as it is written, and therefore it has not yet been fully understood. To the contrary, the way of God is higher than the ways of men (and women) regarding the marriage analogy and the explanation example. But are rather explained in Christ's prayer to the Father that we might be One, as they are One. Which Jesus did also reveal, saying, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me." Which does not result in two joined by the unity of one mind, etc., but rather...as the title of this tread would suggest--simply, as One, "In Christ" who shares the same kind of Oneness as Himself being "In God" and One. Which has also been described as God being "all in all", and therefore One, not as many in the way that we are prone to think, but as One as quite literally being "in Him" and He "in us"...just as many have already experienced Christ in them, though they did not fully understand having been left for a time in the world, which end is soon to come.

Paul coined the phrase "in Christ" or "in him" in reference to the faithful Jesus-believers. The phrase originally referred to students or disciples who agreed to study under and learn from "a master" or "a teacher." Baptism was one of the initial steps involved in becoming a disciple and thus when the student is "baptized into" water he or she is also immersed in the instructions and commandments of the teacher. The disciples of John, for instance, were baptized "into" John, meaning these disciples were not only baptized in the Jordan River, they were immersed in John's teaching. Likewise those who become disciples of Jesus are baptized "into" Jesus. His disciples are "in him" and they are immersed in his teaching. Refer to Acts 19.

So, you could be a believer in and follower of Jesus, practice some form of “Christian” religious worship, be devout, moral, etc. etc, but not be owned by Him, not “in him”.
‘Owned by’ implies separate parts, pieces, or selves.
That’s not at all what Jesus was referring to.

What Jesus pointed out is the holon nature of reality.
This is prior to logic, not a product of logic or thinking.

No, it’s not about ownership.
That’s the illusory perspective of ‘ego’.
The ‘body’ points to infinite mind, or ‘the church’, not separate human body’s. That’s an appearance of infinite mind.
Hence, the ‘body’ is the temple, or, ‘they will not say there it is or here it is’.
“It” is already in your midst!

”You” are already ‘in’. Jesus pointed to a realization, not getting into a separate physical place or state.

• Christ’s body is the church of which He is the head (Col 1:18, Eph 5:23);
Reality is apparent yet never becomes any thing.

It is about ownership. Those "in Christ" are his. He paid for them by shedding his blood. That's what the scriptures clearly say.

You are "in Christ" by following a process. I have no idea what you mean by stating "you are already in Christ". Yes, I am, because I was obedient to the gospel and became a Christian by adherence to the commands and following what God has laid out in his plan of salvation.

If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?
