What was the sign that Jesus gave? "That, they, the Jews would cause the temple to be destroyed."

When did this occur? Around 40 years later when the Roman Army levelled the temple and scattered the remaining Israelites in the Land of Canaan to the four corners of the earth.

What was Jesus basing this sign on? This: -

2 Chronicles 7:19-22: - 19 But if you turn away and forsake the statutes and commandments I have set before you, and if you go off to serve and worship other gods, 20 then I will uproot Israel from the soil I have given them, and I will banish from My presence this temple I have sanctified for My Name. I will make it an object of scorn and ridicule among all the peoples.​
21 And when this temple has become a heap of rubble, all who pass by it will be appalled and say, ‘Why has the LORD done such a thing to this land and to this temple?’ 22 And others will answer, ‘Because they have forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them—because of this, He has brought all this disaster upon them.’ ”​

What was Jesus foretelling in His response to the Jew who were asking Jesus about His authority to clean out the temple of the sacrificial animals and money changers? That in the near future they, the Jews, would cause the temple to be turned into a pile of rubble because of their continual idolatrous worship and that when that occurred that He would rebuild the temple after three days of the Lord, i.e., around 3,000-years into the future from then.

Then in verse 21 John clarified that Jesus was referring to His rebuilding of the temple in the distant future from the body of His believers.

John then went on to say this in verse 22: -

22 After He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this. Then they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.​

The disciples remembered the words that Jesus had spoken about the future rebuilding of the temple to them and they believed the Old Testament scriptures where this has been foretold, and the words that He had spoken to them.

Sadly, Jesus' reference to the future "three days of the Lord' has been wrongly associated with the death and resurrection of Jesus over a three-day period, shortly afterwards, with the association that "Jesus then became the Temple of God," after His resurrection.

This understanding is not in line with both the Old and the New testaments.
