From the site ^

“The thing that sets ['The Chosen'] apart is how real and authentic all of these characters feel, how human they are, how flawed they are,” he said. In the show, Little James suffers from cerebral palsy and scoliosis, which makes him limp.

“I think one great thing about Gen Z is they're open to having these difficult conversations and asking the tough questions, and ‘The Chosen’ is the same. ‘The Chosen’ asks a lot of really difficult questions, like, ‘Why am I not being healed, but other people are?’ And I think that that resonates, and I think that Gen Z is a generation of thinkers and questioners and ‘The Chosen’ definitely leans into that. I hope that it has a lifelong impact on them.”

~

Compare to Scripture,

Matthew 9:35 KJV
And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

Matthew 12:15 KJV
But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;

Acts 10:38 KJV
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

I've not watched the series, except the first pilot episode. Don't they make a big deal about this disciple not being healed? That is in direct conflict with the Bible, and with Jesus' ministry.

Personally I find it appalling! This grossly misrepresents Jesus.

I think there is something about Peter being a tax cheat? Is that right?

Personally, I don't know how someone can watch this and not reject it for it's falsehoods.

Much love!

This made me laugh. :)

Have you watched The Chosen? If so, does the fictionalized Jesus make you laugh? (One review of the program I read called the character “goofball Jesus”.)

I know you read the Bible. Does it make you laugh when you read what Jesus says in scripture?

the definitive portrayal of my people

That’s a red flag.

The “definitive portrayal” is 95% man made.
Notice it is not of Scripture but his people?

I think you’ve lost your mind over this.

As a pastor, you must know that just because a story is fiction does not mean it is untrue. See The Protocol Son.

Sometimes.
  • When he told his mother about being gone for days days when he was 12 was funny.
  • Telling his mother ‘it is not my time’ but still being the superhero in turning water into wine made me laugh.
  • Telling Peter to cast the net on the other side of the boat after he fished all night was hilarious.
  • His comment to Nathanial (?) about seeing him under the tree was pretty funny.
  • Scolding Peter after demonstrating enough faith to walk on water made me LOL. Can you imagine yourself walking on water and being scolded for not having enough faith?
  • That scene with Pilate, where his response to Jesus was to ask Jesus what was truth had to put a smile on your face.
  • Asking Peter 3x if he loved him was very funny.
  • And the funniest thing is the resurrected Jesus in the Sea of Galilee cooking a meal for his home’s.
I think it is fair to say our take on Jesus’ great personality is very different.

For me, the Bible’s portrayal of God’s people is the definitive portrayal of God’s people.
That’s wonderful! But others are not so limited.

Let me spoon feed you. The Chosen is not about the Bible. Therefore, you are holding it to a false standard.

Being limited by the Bible -> not going beyond what is written.
You have lost your mind. I’m sorry to say. You are holding people to a false standard AS IF Christians cannot participate in modern society, art, culture, technology, etc.

What a legalist you have revealed yourself to be.

The Chosen is not about the Bible? Millions of people think that it is.
So what? You keep inventing ways to castigate Christians doing the work God has called them to do.

I’ve already told you several times what The Chosen is about. What does the title suggest?

What a legalist you have revealed yourself to be.

In order for you to be consistent you must make the same accusations against all who have raised concerns about The Chosen that you make against me.

I’ve quoted a great many of people who raised the red flag about The Chosen long before I gave it any thought at all.

Don’t you think the millions of people who think The Chosen is about the Bible should know that it isn’t?

You keep inventing ways to castigate Christians doing the work God has called them to do.

I keep posting quotations of Christians who are warning people about The Chosen.

I’ve already told you several times what The Chosen is about.

Entertainment.

The purpose of the Bible isn’t entertainment. Right?

What does the title suggest?

The title of what?

The more I dig into The Chosen the more concerned I become about it. I’m hardly the only pastor who is. (See the remarks of pastors I’ve quoted and documented in this thread.) I think more should be. I hope more will be.

Should pastors be saying from the pulpit what @Wrangler - who gives it his highest recommendation - has said - “The Chosen is not about the Bible”?

That’s a wake-up call for millions of people.

“There are more problems with The Chosen than the bad theology involved and the Mormon influence on the show. …”

I’ve only watched part of one episode, and found it to be wildly inaccurate. That’s hardly a fair hearing.

Programming like this is a pet peeve of mine. (There’s my bias.) I’ve met too many people who get their theology from television and movies rather than from the Bible.

The Chosen is a fictional account, a dramatization, of the biblical Jesus story. The writers take certain creative liberties to provide entertainment for their audience.

I‘m aware that many people love this program. Several whom I’ve spoken with acknowledge the inaccuracies and don’t allow it, they say, to influence their theology.

But what about those who love the program and aren’t aware that it is inaccurate? What is it doing to their theology?

Is it harmless or is it dangerous? Let me know what you think.
I saw it one time. My first impression was “That’s not in the Bible.” So I never watched it again

They no doubt found the need to lampoon Jesus in his day also.
The need to lampoon, to misrepresent and to downright lie about another reflects more on the actor than the acted on.

God is long suffering as the jeers and mocking of the leaders and the crowd go up.

I have to say, to his credit, that Jenkins has said in interviews that 95% of The Chosen is not in the Bible.

That leaves the viewers of the program with, by his estimate, 5% that is in the Bible.

Viewers of the program are filling their minds with fiction.

When I read one reviewer of the program - who likes it - refer to the fictionalized Jesus as “goofball Jesus” that crossed a line for me.

Kids aren't egotistical and are really good at forgiveness. We lose that as we age. Jesus is going to transform us so that we again have those characteristics. We can't do that for ourselves.
Patrick,

Maybe that is why Jesus said you must be like the little children.

All in good faith,
Matthew

I suppose Judas thought he was doing the right thing.....until he didn't......and you know the outcome of that!

They no doubt found the need to lampoon Jesus in his day also.

Surely those lampooning Jesus would be his enemies, not his disciples.

The need to lampoon, to misrepresent and to downright lie about another reflects more on the actor than the acted on.
