St. Peter in 2 Peter 1:20-21, warned against personal interpretation of Scripture with regard to forming doctrine.
This is a very common misunderstanding of this passage.
2 Peter 1:19-21 KJV
19) We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
20) Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
21) For the prophecy
came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
2 Peter 1:19-21 LITV
19) and we have the more established prophetic Word, in which you do well to take heed, as to a lamp shining in a murky place, until day dawns and the Light-bearing One rises in your hearts;
20) knowing this first, that every prophecy of Scripture
did not come into being of its own interpretation;
21) for prophecy was not at any time borne by the will of man, but being borne along by the Holy Spirit, holy men of God spoke.
2 Peter 1:19-21 YLT
19) And we have more firm the prophetic word, to which we do well giving heed, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, till day may dawn, and a morning star may arise—in your hearts;
20) this first knowing, that no prophecy of the Writing
doth come of private exposition,
21) for not by will of man did ever prophecy come, but by the Holy Spirit borne on holy men of God spake.
This is a passage concerning the origin of Biblical prophecy, as is shown in the grammar of vs. 20, and the simple statement of vs. 21.
"come into being" is the thought here, the origin, not by private explanation (that is, the prophet's own ideas), not by the choice of a man, the the Holy Spirit carried the holy men who spoke His Word.
While I agree we need to follow the Holy Spirit's revelation of Scripture, this passage is actually teaching something different, and it's a mis-use of Scripture to substitute another meaning.
You can offer an application, such as to say, The Holy Spirit, not man, gave us these prophecies, so the Holy Spirit, not man, interprets them.
Concerning the "private interpretation" of Scripture, it's my view that the Holy Spirit does not, and will not contradict Himself, and therefore no word of Scripture will be overturned by any understandings of Scripture given by the Holy Spirit. Therefore by the clear and direct sayings of Scripture we can test anyone's private interpretations. If it's from the Spirit it will agree fully with the Bible.
I've found that a great many teachings actually contradict this or that passage, and by that I can know the teaching is false. Those who make such contradictory claims often assert this is a "spiritual understanding" or something like that. But true understanding will never contradict the plain sayings of the Scriptures.
Much love!
