Jesus meant "hate in a holy manner." If within your heart you are saying: "Hatred, as He taught us, is never holy. So He is contradicting Himself." No. He's not contradicting Himself. He's saying that we must hate the heaviness of love, the sensual passionateness of love for your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and for your very life, on the contrary He orders us to love relatives and life with the light freedom of spirits. Love them in God and for God, never postponing God to them, endeavouring and taking care to lead them where the disciple has already arrived, that is to God, the Truth. We will thus love God and relatives in a holy manner, safeguarding each love, so that family ties will not be a burden but wings, not a fault, but justice. We must be prepared to hate even our lives in order to follow Him. He hates his life who without fear of losing it or making it sad from a human point of view, uses it to serve Him. But it is only an appearance of hatred. A feeling erroneously called "hatred" by man who cannot elevate himself, as he is entirely earthly, by little superior to brutes.

In actual fact such apparent hatred, which consists in denying sensual satisfaction to one's life in order to give a more and more intense life to the spirit, is love. It is love, of the highest degree and the most blessed. To deny oneself base satisfactions, to reject sensual affections, to risk unfair reproaches, criticism and punishment, being rejected, cursed and perhaps persecuted, all that is a sequence of grief. But it is necessary to embrace such grief and take it upon ourselves, like a cross, a scaffold on which all past faults are expiated to be justified by God, from Whom we can obtain every true, mighty, holy grace for those whom we love. He who does not carry his cross and does not follow Him, he who cannot do that cannot be His disciple. (PV3)

Jesus said to not love the following things in the world: lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride of life, as made clear in 1 Jn. 2:16, because those are of the world, not of the Father.

There are many loves and various powers. There is the love of first power: the one given to God. Then there is the love of second power: the love of a mother or of a father, because if the previous one is entirely spiritual, this one is spiritual by two parts and carnal by one. It is true that human affection is mixed in it, but the superior sentiment prevails, because a father and mother, who are such in a wholesome and holy way, do not only feed and caress the body of their child, but they give also nourishment and love to the mind and the spirit of their creature. And what I am saying is so true, that those who devote themselves to children, even if only to educate them, end up by loving their pupils, as if they were of their own flesh. There is the love for one's wife: love of third power because it is made—Jesus is always talking of wholesome and holy loves—half of spirit and half of flesh. A man, besides being the husband of his wife, is a teacher and a father to her; and a woman is an angel and a mother to her husband, besides being his wife. These are the three highest loves.

The first one of the second series is the love for our neighbour. In actual fact it is the fourth in power. Then comes the love for science. Finally the love for work. (PV2)
My understanding is that Jesus is saying our love for our parents and family, must look like hatred when compared to the love we have for Him.
I believe "hate in a holy manner" applies to everything in the world. That would include all the people of the world along with their religious, political and educational institutions. All of these are Anti-Christ, so we must not love them, if we are to follow Christ.

The Lord Jesus Christ, also said the two greatest commandments are 1. to love God, 2. to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. So there are many different applications for the words "love" and "hate", so it all comes down to the specific context which they are used in.

Every Bible doctrine has a positive and negative context, rightly dividing the Word of God is not dependent on human wisdom or philosophy. God makes the truth of the gospel plain to the humble, but He hides it from the proud.

Many still believe that Jesus came into the world to bring peace, but we know He didn't because He said He came as a sword to divide families and pit son against father and daughter against mother. He also promised to return as a Man of War, with His armies of Angels to slay billions of men women and children. So much for the "meek and mild Jesus", which the "prosperity preachers" preach.

Matthew 5:22 Whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be in danger of hell fire.
You use a very blunt instrument to discern the Word of God. The word "fool" is used many times in the Bible, are you suggesting that all those Saints and Prophets of God who wrote the Holy Scriptures are in danger of hell fire?

We always hear about Gods love of sinners.

John 3:16 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

But nobody likes to hear about Gods hatred of the world.

John 2:15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

Some Christians believe that God wants us to love our enemy, but we see that Gods forbids us to love our enemy the world.

God even tells us that we cannot be His Disciples if we don't hate our mother and father, let alone our enemies.

Luke 14:26-30 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.

The bible describes Gods hatred in many places, below are just some.

  1. God hates the workers of iniquity (Psalm 5:5)
  2. God hates the wicked (Psalm 11:5)
  3. God hates the sacrifices of the wicked (Proverbs 15:8)
  4. God hates the ways of the wicked (Proverbs 15:9)
  5. God hates the thoughts of the wicked (Proverbs 15:26)
  6. God hates feet that make haste to run to evil (Proverbs 6:18)
  7. God hated Esau (Malachi 1:1-3; Romans 9:13)
  8. God hates the deeds of the Nicolaitans (Revelation 2:6)
God hates everyone outside of Christ, so when we hear people misquoting John 3"16 to make it say "God so loved the whole world and every single person in it", know that there is no truth in them and they have come under strong delusion.
That's right. Did He love the likely tens of millions he destroyed in the Flood? No, that was not an expression of love. He will return and destroy billions (likely 2/3 of the planet)... that is not an expression of love either. He is a God of justice. Romans 1 says people reach a certain point after ample opportunities a d God
"gives them over", let's them go to their debased lives- at that point they are reprobate.

Interesting thought …but tell me - If you had a beloved dog that was terminally sick , would it be by your love that you have him put to sleep , or your hatred for him?

the flaw in many arguments and statements made about what God is or is not thinking, or saying , is because we tend to think that He thinks with a human mind … He does not think in straight lines as man does … He is not a man. Gods love is perfect , it also means that He uses pain and what we feel is negative to perfect love .

Can't compare an animal's life with a human life. Physically, their illness and days left to live is not based on a person's love or hate relationship. Furthermore,
animals do not have a spiritually redemptive existence based on a rational choice.
I would never assume or imply to know God's thoughts, I just learn to know His word - which as the OP stated, implies that He does hate.
Because God 's love is perfect, does not mean He is void of hate. He loves many and actually hates many. As I stated, judging and then casting a few billion souls into the Lake of Fire is not love. It has nothing to do with love, it's justice. And justice sometimes deprives/separates people from God's love. That is their punishment. If we killed someone, we call it a hate crime. Of course it is hate. God kills people. But it is a righteous judgment. He gives life and takes it away ... blesses us, gives us eternal life or blots us out of the Book of Life.

Most professing Christians don't believe that God hates anyone. They claim that "God is love" and as such He is not capable of hatred. But as you rightly pointed out, He would not be just if He loved evil doers.

My understanding is that He only loves believers, because we are hid in Christ. Everyone is born with a sin nature, so God cannot love a sinner until He kills him and gives him a new spirit (His Holy Spirit).

So we can say that God never loved us before we were added to the body of Christ. Now He doesn't love our old man, and He only loves us now because we are new creatures and members of the body of Christ.

Romans 5:6-8
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Ephesians 2:4-5
But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.

I never implied that. God loved me prior to my conversion - since I was born. He had a plan that 35 years years after I was born, we would have this divine appointment. So He had to protect me, guide me along the way to make sure I made that appointment. And months leading up to that time, He sent witnesses and ministers into my life and gradually opened my eyes. It was all undeniably orchestrated.
