I never understood prophecy unfolding at discreet points in time (I always tended to view it as one long continuum). Learning this has been great!

That's the nature of chaos I guess, all you can do is be happy with it.

The point being that even being "chaos", God knows when and where it will develop.

Christ's 7 Messages to the 7 Churches are ALL STILL ACTIVE TODAY. "How so?", some might ask.

The Church you attend, you are to look at all 7 of Christ's Messages in Revelation 2 & 3 and compare.

There were only 2 Churches that Lord Jesus had no rebuke for. So those represent His very elect. You might study what they knew that the other 5 Churches didn't.

At the end of Revelation 1, Jesus also showed John that there are 7 CANDLESTICKS represented in HEAVEN for the 7 Churches. That means... the 7 Churches REPRESENT a symbolic PATTERN IN HEAVEN for ALL... Churches, from the start of the Church all the way up to the day of Christ's future return.

But MEN'S FALSE DOCTRINES like Darby's false Dispensationalist theories, instead try to force Christ's 7 Messages to the 7 Churches into a false 'Church Ages' theory. Doing that destroys... what Lord Jesus gave His 7 Messages for! How?

By creating a FALSE AGE for each Church Message, that is to WRONGLY assign them to past history, which in turn means to DISREGARD them as already fulfilled! Thus you will DISREGARD Christ's warnings in them of potential errors in YOUR OWN CHURCH you go to, thus not compare errors that might associate with those early 7 Churches, and thus Christ's rebuke and warning to repent!
I have always taken "church age" to represent how the church body grows spiritually throughout history. And with each new age there comes greater wisdom, knowledge and understanding of scripture. Remember the "faith" movement? Whatever you speak you will receive if you have faith?
As the church evolved it grew further and further away from preaching the foundational teaching of the gift of salvation. Jesus being the chief cornerstone. And when this foundation was being built upon man started using doctrines which they created and added their doctrine of faith to follow as well as the Doctrine of Jesus Christ.
Only those who are studying and asking the Holy Spirit to teach them the truth will be able to see the deception in the doctrines of man....which scripture tells us to not follow them.

I remember a quote from Saint Augustine that went, "Mans extremity is Gods opportunity." But as far as I am concerned mans extremity is God's big headache. Which is why I don't mind objections, debate, and disagreements. There are possibilities that I have referred to some nut as the star of the Laodicean Church Age and in that you will all perish for not following his teachings.

That's philosophy from men's teaching, not actually what is written in God's Word. John Darby (1830s) was one of the first ones to come up with the 'Church Ages' theory. It's just a theory and nothing more. But Darby's idea is a theory that actually destroys... the purpose of Christ including those seven Messages.

Firstly, in Revelation 1, Lord Jesus showed John seven candlesticks in the heavenly, and told John those represented the seven Churches. That reveals a HEAVENLY PATTERN for the seven Churches. And Jesus even warns with the very first Church at Ephesus, that if they don't repent He will remove their 'candlestick' out of its place. What place? In the Heavenly Pattern that Jesus showed John in Revelation 1:20.

That reveals we have a lot more going on here about the seven Churches than mere history.

Jesus had rebuke for 5 out of the 7 Churches. Only 2 Churches, Smyrna and Philadelphia, He had no rebuke for. And those two Churches both had a teaching that Jesus mentioned with them, that was missing from the other five Churches. Those two Churches represent His elect that cannot be deceived for the end.

The END also is an idea that Jesus points to with those seven Messages. So to TRY and say those Messages fulfill some 'Church Ages' theory is totally moving away from Christ's purpose for those Messages. Each Church today is to look at those seven Messages, and then look at their Church, and compare. And I can guarantee you, you can find Churches today that fit every one of those seven Messages.

Thanks for sharing! Please know I will take the time to enjoy and study your research.
YOu are welcome!

If you wish to have an indepth study of the church ages I suggest you get the book "Footsteps of the Messiah" by Arnold Fruchtenbaum. It is an in depth study of eschatology and goes into great detail about the seven letters and how they play out prophetically. I have used this book as my standard text in teaching eschatology classes now for over 2 decades.

This is a false doctrine especially instigated by John Darby of England and William Branham in the US. I would not be so lulled into loose theories that quickly develop into concrete traditions and beliefs as we have today in Christian doctrine.

These 7 types of congregation that existed after Christ's in SW Turkey resurrection represent characteristics of typical congregations then, through every generation, and today. There is no intriguing, end-times and nifty time sequence of the predominance of specific characteristics of one congregation in one age over another.

just saying....
Well , I disagree.

Yes they are seven types of church congregations in all ages of the church.
They also are seven letters to seven literal churches.
They are also seven types of believers in every age of the church age.
Now for them showing a progression of the church through the ages that is drawn by the following:

1. the name of the church and what it means.
2. the characteristic of that particular church
3.the exhortations and rebukes of the church.
4. The order of the letters as they appear in Scripture.

When you factor these in and look at the churches and specific dates when the church underwent major changes, it aligns perfectly with history. also when you look at what the name means and matchit to historic dates, you see that the general characteristic of teh visible church matches the exhortations and condemnations for each particular church!

Darby may or may have not laid the seeds for this, but it is still true and fits to a tee. The reason it took so long is that eschatology was a subject buried in the covenant theology of Romanism and those protestant branches which kept to covenantalism. Also as Daniel said in the last days more and more truths of end times would be revealed. Unfortunately with that truth comes the fact that many sincere believers have gone off the dep end with all sorts of whacky eschatology based on an allegorical reinterpretation of SCripture.

To know these things I deem a good thing. It is also very easy to include the ego of man. My church is the Latter Day Laodicean church, for example, and then to say something like, it is heretical to go against my teachings, especially as I am the star of the Laodicean church age. And then proceed to make the interpretation a bad thing. In which... In the head of the wrong person an easy thing to do!

The "7 church ages" Prophecy. I have heard this prophecy started by "quacks" and agree that this can be true. Especially when such people make themselves the "angel" of the church age as if all knees should bow to them. My beliefs are that the churches came along as follows....

The purpose of Revelation was to reveal what was going to come to pass....

The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John.... - Revelation 1:1

Which all of this was to heavy for just ordinary churches in Asia that did not amount to anything....

The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches. Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; - Revelation 1:20 - Revelation 2:1

Ephesus - Messianic - Beginning with the Apostle to the Circumcision, Peter
Smyrna - Martyr - Beginning with the Apostle to the Un-Circumcision, Paul
Pergamos - Orthodoxy formed in this time... Pergos is a tower... Needed in the dark ages
Thyatira - Catholicism formed in this time - The spirit of Jezebel is to control and to dominate.
Sardis - Protestantism formed in this time- A sardius is a gem - elegant yet hard and rigid
Philadelphia - Wesleyism formed in this time - To be sanctioned is to acquire it with love.
Laodicea - Charismatic movement formed in this time - Beginning with DL Moody, the first to make money off of ministry

Candlesticks - Seven church congregations
Stars - Individuals within the congregations, all held in the right hand of Christ
Seals - The seven seals sealed each congregation within the lambs book of life
Angels - The current preacher to the congregation.

And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon. - Revelation 5:4

If this interpretation is not correct why all the ado? And... If you have a better interpretation please post your info! I dont mind for people to disagree with me and may end up learning a thing of two! I believe the churches came down as seven and each congregation is different in their generation!

I think this is the thread I was looking for, reading through the letters to the 7 Churches in Revelation at the moment, their strengths and weaknesses are so relatable to the different Christian denominations and churches out there today, even down to each of us as individuals.

Noting the differences these days...

* People do not mind going to church in shorts
* The disappearing Sunday School
* Ministers making millions of dollars in ministry
* Only Sunday morning services where everyone is gathered during community worship
* Only a handful of men in shirt and tie
* Not very many couples staying together long enough to see grandchildren
* Contemporary replacing traditional
* Very few successful churches displaying denominational names. The name of the church is something like "Faith Worship" and you have got to dig deep to see if they are affiliated with any kind of denomination
* Unique viewpoints. After hearing them talk... What are they? Baptist? Methodist? Pentecostal?

  1. Here are the two introduction narratives for chapters 2 and 3 of the book of Revelation commentary. The first is written as though it was written directly by God Himself, while the second, Introduction to chapters 2 and 3 are my introduction before discussing in detail all the individual verses within the chapters. These two narratives should give you a very good understanding of how I have interpreted the book of Revelation and God's presentation on His 7 churches. By the way, if you study Revelation, God does use this same method for most of the book....
  2. For example: In chapter 1 God will reveal Himself in 3 ways but there is only One God,
  3. Regarding His church, there is only one church but He reveals it in 7 different facets,
  4. He reveals the 4 different methods the little horn of Daniel 7 and 8 will conduct over the course of the 1000 years (beginning in 500 AD to the end of time) as 4 different horses. There is only one little horn but God reveals him to us in 4 different ways that he will used against His church during the different periods of the churches.
  5. He will also provide us with 6 different ways that He will warn us though the Trumpets - He will taylor each trumper warning to those churches so we can see His warning for the transgression found in the church,
  6. He will also give us the bowl judgements in 7 ways but there really is only going to be one final judgement... But He gives us a judgement as if it was for one of the churches only. In reality He is breaking apart the transgressions of man separately so we can see each of them clearly.
  7. This method that God is using is found also in Daniel... God also provides and uses the same symbols that originate in Daniel, but just as important is that He uses this kind of separating His message to use in multiples so we can see them in more of a cellular level. Thus, it is critical to understand not only the unique symbols in Daniel but God's method of presenting them....

To my Beloved Church,

The seven churches

Let us begin with something you already know and hold dear: the mystery of the Trinity. I am one God, yet I have chosen to reveal Myself in three distinct ways. As the Father, I am the Creator, the origin of all things. As the Son, I walked among you, offering My life for your salvation. As the Holy Spirit, I dwell within you, guiding and empowering you. These three revelations are not separate, but unified, each revealing a facet of who I am and how I work among you. Through the Trinity, you see the fullness of My nature—different expressions of the same God, all working toward one purpose: your redemption and relationship with Me.

Now, I will use a similar approach to reveal the fullness of My one church. Just as I have presented Myself in three ways, I will now present My church in seven ways. Though there is only one church, I have chosen to speak to you as though there were seven. This is not to divide you, but to help you see the breadth and depth of what I have called you to be. Each message to the seven churches reveals a unique facet of My church: its strengths, its struggles, its promises, and its path back to Me.

In Ephesus, I show a church that values truth and perseverance but has grown cold in love. In Smyrna, a church that suffers yet remains faithful. In Pergamum, a church that stands firm in faith but compromises with the world. In Thyatira, a church that grows in service yet tolerates corruption. In Sardis, a church that looks alive but is spiritually dead. In Philadelphia, a church that is small in strength but great in faithfulness. And in Laodicea, a church that is lukewarm and self-reliant, needing to return to Me.

Each message carries commendations for what you do well, rebukes for where you fall short, and promises for those who overcome. Each message also reveals an aspect of who I am—the One who holds the seven stars, the First and the Last, the One with the sharp two-edged sword, the Son of God who searches hearts and minds, the One who holds the seven spirits, the One who is holy and true, and the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness.

This is My method, My way of teaching you about My church and Myself. By addressing you in these seven ways, I illuminate every possible situation you might face—as a church, as a community, and as individuals. No matter your circumstances, you will find yourself reflected in these messages. You will see My vision for what you can be, My correction for where you have gone astray, and My promise of what awaits if you hold fast to Me.

I want you to understand that these messages are not just for seven ancient congregations. They are for My one church throughout all time. They are for every church, every believer, every heart that seeks to follow Me. By presenting My church as though it were seven, I reveal the full spectrum of what it means to be My people. Just as a single beam of light refracts into seven colors through a prism, so My words to the churches refract to show the fullness of My truth. Yet, when you see these colors, remember that they are all part of the same light—the same church—called to shine brightly in the world.

Through this approach, I am showing you Myself, My identity, and the identity of My church. I want each of you to understand how My church should be: a place of love, truth, endurance, purity, life, faithfulness, and reliance on Me. I want each of you to know how to recognize My church and to see the way into it. The way is through Me—through the One who walks among the lampstands, the One who holds the stars, the One who knocks at the door of your heart.

So listen to what the Spirit says to the churches. Reflect on these messages, not as separate letters to distant places, but as My love letter to My one church—to you. Each word is meant to draw you closer to Me, to help you grow in faith and love, and to prepare you for the day when My church will shine in all its glory, united as one under My name, and I am with you always.

With eternal love,

The One who calls you to be My church

Introduction to chapters 2-3

the seven churches

The letters to the seven churches in Revelation (chapters 2–3) follow a consistent and thoughtful structure, emphasizing Jesus’ care, authority, and intimate knowledge of His people. Each letter begins with a personal address to the "angel" of the church, symbolizing either a spiritual representative, the church’s collective identity, or its leadership. This opening affirms that the message comes directly from Jesus, setting the tone for what follows. Jesus introduces Himself uniquely in each letter, drawing from the powerful imagery in Revelation 1. These descriptions, such as “the one who holds the seven stars” (Ephesus) or “the First and the Last” (Smyrna), are tailored to the challenges or strengths of each church, reminding them of His authority, presence, and role as Lord and Judge.

Most letters include a commendation where Jesus acknowledges the church’s faithfulness, perseverance, or good deeds. For example, He praises Smyrna for enduring suffering and Philadelphia for their faithful endurance. However, Jesus also offers rebukes to five of the seven churches, addressing issues like losing their first love (Ephesus), tolerating false teachings (Pergamum and Thyatira), spiritual deadness (Sardis), or lukewarm complacency (Laodicea). These criticisms are direct and meant to bring the churches to repentance, emphasizing both Jesus’ righteousness and His desire for their spiritual restoration.

Each letter includes a call to action, urging the churches to repent, return to their first works, or hold fast to what they have. Alongside these commands, Jesus provides warnings about the consequences of failing to change, such as the removal of their lampstand or judgment against sin. However, each letter also ends with a promise to those who overcome. These promises, like eating from the tree of life (Ephesus) or receiving the crown of life (Smyrna), point to the eternal rewards and hope found in Christ. Finally, Jesus concludes each message with the exhortation: “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

This makes the messages timeless, inviting all believers—not just the original recipients—to reflect and apply these lessons.

The structure of these letters reveals Jesus’ deep love and concern for His church. He provides encouragement and hope, while also calling for accountability and faithfulness. The consistency of this format highlights that every church is seen, known, and addressed by Christ Himself. It’s a reminder that His guidance is as relevant for us today as it was for the early church, offering both comfort and challenge in our walk with Him.
