While eating breakfast I considered my reply to a request to work a late shift.
At this point I would typically say, "No thanks, I'm not available."
But I considered adding a comment, "Consider Nigel, he has done awesome work lately."

A few weeks back, Nigel was assigned to cover a late sift. I was uncomfortable with that and voiced my concern.
But recently Nigel covered a late shift and he did an awesome job. I was very impressed with his work.

Therefore, I see this as an opportunity to encourage this young person by giving him a recommendation.

In what ways can we go the extra mile to do what is right?

In what ways can we go the extra mile to do what is right?
5:41
And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.

Here’s how I understand this:

When someone invites you into their circle,
you join them in their circle—
but ultimately, you must return to your rightful place:
The place that glorifies God.

I fear that if you look down on them, they will know.
What's to prevent you from glorifying God while you
remember that you were one of them before you
converted to Christ? You can't really love them if you
look down on them. I don't think Christ did that.

I think you're right to worry. God doesn't look down on anyone, so we shouldn't look down on anyone, Just put ourselves in a humble position and think about how Jesus Christ faced others.

Yes.
The story of Zacchaeus comes to mind. (Luke 19)

It would be a different story if you knew Nigel needed the hours.

The Puritan work ethic, is a biblical concept I believe to be summarized by Colossians 3:23-24
"23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving."

Then sometimes I think it necessary to teach the concept from Psalm 146:3, by not being overly accommodating. So that people will trust God rather than man.

"3Do not put your trust in princes,

in human beings, who cannot save.

4When their spirit departs, they return to the ground;

on that very day their plans come to nothing.

5Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob,

whose hope is in the Lord their God."

My thoughts were only about his job performance.

You would have to be confident in his ability to fill the role. Otherwise putting him in that position would be throwing him under the bus. Only then would considerations of who needs more hours, or taking on additional burdens yourself come into play.

But suppose that was in their Job requirements, but they were unable to perform that duty after sufficient training. Should you cover for their ineptitude? For how long?

I think being a yes man most of the time. we should be supportive caring and concerned for the people around us. I rarely say no when i work my job. There are exceptions but its good to look out for the team, in every instance without going overboard of course.
