Hidden Righteousness and the Shining Light the Two Sides of One Truth.

When Jesus walked on earth, He taught His followers two great lessons about how to live their faith. At first, these may seem opposite, but together they form a beautiful balance.

In one place, Jesus said:

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16 NKJV)

But later, He warned:

Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 6:1 NKJV)

At first glance, one verse tells us to let others see our good works, while the other tells us not to show them. The key difference lies in why we do them — the motive behind the action.

In Matthew 5:16, Jesus encourages His disciples to live in such a way that their lives reflect God’s goodness, so that others, when seeing that goodness, will glorify God and not the person. The goal is not to draw attention to oneself but to make God known through one’s behavior. Our “light” is not pride or self-promotion — it is the reflection of God’s character shining through our actions of love, mercy, and truth.

But in Matthew 6:1, Jesus warns against doing good to be seen by others. That is, when someone gives, prays, or helps mainly for human praise, their act loses its spiritual value. The same act of kindness can either glorify God or glorify self — it depends on the heart behind it.

So we see that hidden righteousness and shining light are not opposites — they complete each other.

When you let your light shine, you are living openly as a follower of Christ — showing kindness, forgiveness, patience, and faithfulness without shame. Your life becomes a lamp in a dark world. Yet, even as you shine, you must keep your heart humble and your motives pure, remembering that the glory belongs to God alone.

Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)

This balance is found throughout Scripture. The prophet Micah said long ago;

He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8)
We are called to do justly — this is our light before others — but also to walk humbly — this is our hidden righteousness before God. The two must walk together, or faith loses its meaning.

Even Jesus Himself shone before men yet lived humbly before His Father. He healed the sick and taught in public, but often withdrew to pray alone in secret (Mark 1:35). He wanted people to see the Father’s power, not His own glory.

When He performed miracles, He often told people not to speak of it (Matthew 8:4). That shows His focus was never on being admired, but on doing the will of God.

I do not seek My own glory; there is One who seeks and judges.” (John 8:50)

The same is true for us. We must let the love of Christ be seen through our lives — not by boasting, but by simply living truthfully and kindly. When people see the good fruit of your life, they will be touched, not because of who you are, but because they see the reflection of God in you. Jesus used the image of light carefully. That is how a believer’s light should be — gentle, constant, pure, and humble.

Hidden righteousness, then, is the root — the secret devotion, prayer, and obedience that no one sees but God. Shining your light is the fruit — the visible love, mercy, and faith that grow from that hidden root. One cannot exist without the other. Without the hidden life, the shining light becomes prideful. Without the shining light, the hidden faith becomes lifeless and closed off from the world.

Jesus taught both because His followers are called to live in both worlds — the secret place with God and the visible world of people. We pray in secret, but we serve in public. We act quietly, but we live openly for God. The balance keeps the soul pure and the witness bright.

Isaiah also spoke of this truth when he said,

“Arise, shine; for your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you.” (Isaiah 60:1)

The glory that shines from us is not ours — it is the Lord’s glory reflected in a humble heart.

Therefore, shine without pride, and serve without seeking praise. When our hearts stay hidden in God, our light shines brightest. The secret life of prayer gives power to the public life of love. And in every act, whether seen or unseen, our goal remains the same — that others may see God’s goodness and give Him glory.

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
(Matthew 5:16)
“Your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.”
(Matthew 6:4)

When these two verses are joined together in the heart, the believer becomes both a quiet servant and a bright witness — a true child of the kingdom.

Blessings.

There's a lot that goes with it. I'll give you these ones.

John 3:19-21
19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

Ephesians 5:10-13
10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.

2 Corinthians 6:14
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers, for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness?

1 John 2:29
If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

Psalm 97:11
Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

Good post LoveYeshua, I will springboard off this here.

I was going to add the other side as Paul shows it who acknowledges as there are good works done in secret are rewarded openly (as are manifest) so those which be otherwise cannot even be hid

1 Ti 5:25 Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise cannot be hid.

For example

Luke 12:1 Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

Followed by the same

Luke 12:2 For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.

Both sides of judgment there, pertains to both works (whether good and evil) which are done in secret

Ecc 12:14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

Similarly Paul said,

Romans 2:16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.

You can follow it out through both good works and evil and the manifestation of the children of God and the devil within the same framework.

Hidden righteousness, then, is the root — the secret devotion, prayer, and obedience that no one sees but God. Shining your light is the fruit

You changed my Thread, or one of my post's teaching on "God's Righteousness" just a bit to too much to create your "Root" and "Fruit" Thread, as you misdefined it as your own works.. (prayer, devotion, and obedience). @LoveYeshua

So, let me correct Your SELF RIGHTEOUSNESS Theology..... for the benefit of real bible students., vs the JW's and similar who would agree with your Thread's info.

Listen...
God's Righteousness, is not your ""prayer life, or your devotion, or your obedience" as all that is your discipleship, and that is not God's Righteousness.

Here is an update for you.......a water baptized religious faker, can have a prayer life, and be devoted to Jesus, and be obedient to their own perception of obedience, and then die today and go to Hell like a Bullet.
Why?
Becasue they didn't have God's Righteousness... they are not born again... and ..Paul teaches that .."they are ignorant of God's Righteousness, and go about to establish their own"........with prayers, devotion, and obedience and works of self effort.

A.)
God's Righteouenss, is "The Gift of Righteousness" and you can't do that......... And His Righteousness was created by the Blood of Jesus, that is the "new Covenant" between Himself and God, and that is all God accepts to accept a sinner., because that is All God offers to the world of sinners as eternal redemption.

So, God's eternal "Gift of Righteousness" is based on The Cross of Christ, where God and a believing sinner can become ONE= ONLY through the Blood of Jesus = and the "imputed righteousness" of God, that is established by the new birth "in Christ".

@Behold, your thread here?

I didnt say that this Thread copied my Teaching, i said it changed it........so, i posted in that regard.

This Thread does not resemble my Thread's teaching at all.... , as my Thread's teaching is Paul's doctrine that states that God's Rightesousness is ""a gift."""

So, in my Thread, i posted that : Grace is the ROOT, and Holiness is the FRUIT..... .

I do seem to recall that i posted this very exact quote to several members on My Thread... including LoveYeshua....and it has now shown up on their Thread.. .but they changed the theology into self righteousness, vs God's Righteousness.
Had they not done that, then i would have not posted a word about it.

So, this member "borrowed" my quote, and then changed it in to "obedience and devotion and prayer".

Notice their post....

,""""""" is the root — Shining your light is the fruit ...."""""

They even use the same order of words....... "root, and then fruit".

So, ive only posted that "God's Grace is the ROOT and HOLINESS is the FRUIT">...about 30 times on this Forum, on Different Threads, including mine, in the last week.

Im use to people using my Threads and posts all over the Internet, (where i post them)... to make Sermons and Sunday School Lessons and commentaries......and Youtube videos.
This has been happening for years, and its all good as long as they dont change the teaching into Legalism = self righteousness theology.
So, when they change My Teaching (Paul's doctrine) , into self righteousness, then i will point that out....ane have.. and not because its going to help the poster.......but it will help the reader to understand what they need to know.

1 John 2:29
If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

I asked Episkopos to explain how to "doeth righteousness" as that is His false Cross Rejecting teaching on : How to be saved.
Its something you do.... that is your righteousness..,. He teaches.
He never answered me, which is normal for Him when He has no answer.
He just goes away for a few days and shows up again with the next video.

So, @ShineTheLight ............i'll ask you the same question.

Go ahead and state how you are "doing righteousness"....... to be righteouess before Holy God.

List 3 or 4 examples of your "doing righteousness"....that you have performed in the last 2 months....

Be specific and if anyone else here who is reading this post.....has been "doing righteousness".. .......go ahead and tell us what you were doing when you did it.

And please dont fake it and say....>>"its when i pray".

Now let me help you out before you try to pretend anything.

Notice carefully....

= A hell bound, Christ rejector.......will sometimes pray when they are in a terrible situation.
= Also, a Hell bound, Christ rejector, will sometimes do something good for a poor person..... or for their neighbor.

See that ?
That is prayer and a good deed..............and that is exactly what a Christian can do, and in both cases that is not "doing righteousness".....that is just performing a work as an unbeliever or as a Christian.

I cannot get through your posts because you use very little scripture, and I prefer straight scriptures, but you made it sound as if it was plagarized from you with an added twist or something, when you said,

You changed my Thread's teaching on "God's Righteousness" just a bit to too much to create your Thread

Not that it cannot be on a certain level seeing the em dashes remain which is typically of things laid out by AI

But I dont see this coming from some bad place but between the scriptures as LoveYeshua set forth.

Instead of comparing your threads (and what you might have said) to this one (and what loveYeshua might have said) since some of us arent tuned into what you have said, why not rather just compare the scripture with other scripture instead of trying to upstage the thread, lay out the word of God to each point, its far easier to make a point, or reproof by it (thats what its there for)

Do you see....>>"ROOT, and FRUIT"?......that is my Quote.

Now. Notice their post....

Thats not an accident, that is a "copy".

So, as i said.... im use to people using my Threads and posts........to develop their own Sermons, and Sunday School lessons, and Youtube Videos and commentaries.
Many people do this over the years, and others will print out my Threads and sometimes my posts, and study them with their Bible.
Im use to it and grateful for it....but, when a Legalist, like LoveYeshua, takes my quote and changes it away from God's Grace into "doing obedience and being devoted and praying" which is self effort and not "Righteousness"....then that must be called out.
They are teaching as "hidden Righteousness"...."doing obedience and being devoted and praying" which is self effort and not "Righteousness".....which of course that has nothing to do with Righteousness, as these are just examples of discipleship.

Behold, not to be rude, but rarely read your posts, as you know we do not see the same things in scripture, you follow Paul and I follow Christ. As for righteousness read the story of Abraham and how it was imputed to him and see, still the same today. why would i take from your posts since I disagree with what you write almost 90% of the time? I can write my own posts thank you, I do not need your help.

Give me the link of this post that you think i copied from you and lets check it out. i will put them out side by side and people will see you are wrong.

You are denying that you read my Threads and Posts, and respond......even in the last few days?

Better think about that.......a little bit more.. @LoveYeshua

Now, You only used my 2 words from a quote of mine...but you used them, obviously, in a quote of yours, when talking about "righteousness" and that is what i was teaching about, also in my Thread........a few days ago when i posted a specific quote.

What i posted to many people, in the last 4 days on a few different Threads........was = "Grace is the ROOT, and Holiness is the FRUIT" when i was teaching on RIGHTEOUSNESS>

And you changed this in your Thread on "hidden RIGHTEOUSNESS"... .......but you kept my quote....>"ROOT and FRUIT"........and created something about "righteousness", that isnt true or i would not have said anything about it.

You used........."Root <> Fruit", in that order in your Thread... as i did on my previous Thread and many posts, .......and that is not a coincedence.

Now if you want to pretend that what im revealing is not true, and that you have not read my Threads or posts in the last few days, and in fact have responded.... then have it your way.
I'll let the members decide, as that is what i always do.

Good to hear. I personally have never seen so em dashes being used currently on online forums all my years online until AI has been brought in to help create posts.

It is considered tell, for example AI responds to this

Artificial intelligence exhibits a pronounced tendency to overuse em dashes (—), a pattern now widely recognized as a stylistic "tell" for machine-generated text. This behavior stems from the em dash's statistical prevalence in the vast training data, which includes informal online writing where the mark is frequently used to mimic conversational flow and spontaneity. As a result, AI models default to the em dash as a flexible, low-risk punctuation choice that maintains fluency without requiring precise logical connections between clauses.

Removing the em dashes is possible through AI tools, so they are not always present in any AI generated response.

  • The em dash is favored by large language models because it acts as a "syntactic wildcard," allowing the model to signal a pause or shift without committing to a specific relationship between ideas, effectively serving as probabilistic camouflage for uncertainty.
  • This overuse has led to a cultural anxiety about authenticity, with the em dash becoming a symbol of the blurring line between human and machine authorship.
  • Writers and readers now often suspect AI-generated content when it is rife with em dashes, as the mark has become a shorthand for artificial writing.
  • To counteract this, users can explicitly instruct AI tools to avoid em dashes by including a directive like "Avoid using em dashes in the response" within their prompts.
  • The phenomenon is not new; early AI-generated content used em dashes more frequently than human writers, particularly in mimicking formal or stylized writing, though modern models can now adjust their punctuation based on requested tone.

where is the link you accuse me of copying from? still waiting, are you afraid?

I didnt say you copied from a "link" i said you rewrote this quote of mine., and i'll post them both for the readers, and for you.

Here is my quote....= "Righteousness is the Root and Holiness is the FRUIT".

Ive posted this many times this very week, to many members... regarding ... "The righteousness of God" and 'Imputed Righteousness".
You and i have talked also this week, and it could be that i posted that same quote to YOU as well.

So, your Thread shows up........talking about "Righteouenss".... and you posted this quote.

@LoveYeshua wrote......"""Hidden righteousness, then, is the ROOT — the secret devotion, prayer, and obedience that no one sees but God. Shining your light is the Fruit —"""

So, you took my Quote........ "Rightoueness is the ROOT, and Holiness is the FRUIT"........and changed it into...

(edited for clarity)...

"""" Rightesouness is the ROOT and Shining your light is the FRUIT"""

You kept "ROOT, and FRUIT" from my origianl quote in the same order., that was talking about RIGHTEOUSNESS>.

So, Do you think the members wont realize it when i show them?

Now, you can have the last word, and i'll let the readers decide.., and what i'll do now is just respond to you again once you start teaching your works salvation message that pretends its rightesousness.

See you there @LoveYeshua .

  • The phenomenon is not new; early AI-generated content used em dashes more frequently than human writers, particularly in mimicking formal or stylized writing, though modern models can now adjust their punctuation based on requested tone.
these em dashes are very useful but you are right many use AI. I hope they do not use it for contents however, AI does not understand spiritual concepts. I use it occasionally for verse searches and it is usually quicker than using a bible software I have.

Blessings.
